I find wealthier people are far more susceptible to the pie fallacy than poor people. That is, the pie fallacy is the belief that one person getting wealthier inherently involves another person losing wealth; it's the idea that wealth in this world is like a pie, where bigger slices fundamentally have to subtract from neighboring slices.

This is a fallacy that no serious economists, including socialist economists, take seriously. Wealth can be stolen, sure, but the vast majority of wealth, at least in the capitalist west, is created anew. A man taking $50 worth of wood and making $100 of chair has increased his wealth without impoverishing anyone else.

People disconnected from manual labor or any kind of concrete work often fall prey to this fallacy.

The idle upper class who get suckered in by socialist nonsense feel tremendous guilt because they falsely think their good fortune (usually in the form of being cared for by well meaning family members) is some kind of personal moral failing. Except they don't feel guilty enough to fix it by giving anything away.

Not that it would be worth it because all things considered, he wasn't very informed.

You have to remember practically nobody used the term "fakenews" before pizzagate. That term was pushed incredibly hard, so hard that it became an international meme pushed through the frontal lobe of the global population. It's not like news people didn't understand the meme would have considerable blowback for their profession, but they understood it was worth it, because their superiors demanded it, because the scandal touched all too powerful people and had to be suppressed, who cares if it set back trust in news a decade or so?
