If you read the top comments most people disagree with the virtue signalling.
Seems like it. I saw the announcement the day of, so most of the replies back then were the signaling bootlickers. Still felt bothered by him doing the whole story explaining the name, building up to why the change, hence why I unsubbed and haven't followed up since.

I'm kinda tired of consumer retro shit at this point. There's nothing interesting about Commodore machines or old PC clones or fucking compact Macs.

shelby is quite possibly the only retro computing enthusiast that genuinely enjoys archiving old media to the point of creating dedicated hardware for archiving raw laserdisk data.
the dude even figured out how to try and fix old caps for old equipment. that's an anal level of detail that many others just can't be bothered with.
dude is a bloody legend.

I'd be a lot more interested in these tech autists if they'd just focus on interesting processors, like the SPARC, or MIPS, or the DEC Alpha. Instead it's all just boring MOS6510 and Motorola 68k.
There are some channels that do a lot of this, but they don't get a ton of views. Gen X manchildren and euroboomers aren't interested in real computers - they're interested in glorified game consoles.

This is sadly correct.

Featuring an appearance by """"June"""" from Nybbles and Bytes after David realizes he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing (again) in trying to fix an European C128. He also doesn't even try fixing the monitor and tells the guy to send it to Adrian Black (who actually does know what he's doing, sometimes).
A Tranny on an 8 Bit Guy video? Again? Fuck! In 2021, he hired an ugly troon called Noelle (Internet nick: Speedy) to make music for a port of PETSCII Robots and stopped watching his videos as much as i used to after he featured him in a video about PETSCII Robots development.

I always knew that slob faggot was a gay communist, that's why i never watch any of his fucking videos besides them being too long, if you want to make a video that shows an interesting old dohickey, make it 8-20 minutes long, not an hour long, i'm not gonna watch that shit (Except if it's a Shango066 video).
VWestlifeFace.png

VWestLife (Kevin Tekel) could seem like one of the few only sane YouTubers that does videos on old dohickeys if you watch his videos for the first time, because he does things like having his videos in a short and simple format that keeps the videos under half hour long, not shoving a Patreon down your throat, and other things that other YouTubers that make videos on old dohickeys no longer do, but he isn't sane, he is an open faggot that supports troonism and is against Christianity to the point that he made a video on how to reporpuse Bible tapes as blank tapes, and in the video itself he put at the end part a VHS clip of a shirtless guy saying "Baseball? You taped baseball over my yoga tapes" recorded from a Canadian TV channel called "Pridevision", and in that same video he recorded over a tape from 1998 from a local Pro-Family organization called New Jersey (where Kevin lives) Family Council, titled "'The Truth About Sex' A seminar for parents & teens featuring Lakita Garth", and there are no online archives of that tape, fuck you Kevin, you fucking hedonist monkey faced pansy.

In a video from 2021 titled 'Panasonic D-Snap - The $1000 SD Card camcorder from 2003!", during the portion where he showcases recordings made using the D-Snap, he showcases a false "Christian" church which has a gay flag next to its sign.

Kevin uploaded to his Camcorder Tests YouTube Channel an hour long video of a faggot pride parade.

Aaaand... Let's not forget that the profile picture for his 'You Can't Download Vinyl' YouTube channel is an erotic picture of a young boy holding a record in bed.

And if you ever read his Mastodon posts without ever watching VWestLife, you would get the impression that Kevin is really fucked up, and you would never ever want to watch one of his videos.

Thing with retro computers is that it was a very limited timeframe, and a lot of the stuff was obsolete inside of three-four years and didn't see a lot happening anymore. Most of the named CPUs had a much longer shelf life in embedded applications than ever being used for actual computers. So the amount of content is naturally limited. Standards establishing themselves mean that things didn't change a lot later in obvious ways later on.

I keep oscillating back to this hobby every few years, pour over the crap I collected over the decades and swim in nostalgia and when you walk off the beaten path, there's a lot of interesting and weird things to find in the gargantulan software collections or when you go through datasheets of more obscure stuff. I think the main problem is the hyperfocusing on specific, popular things of the time and building some ideal world around it. These systems kinda sucked. We weren't stupid back then and knew they kinda sucked. We wished for better. Eventually we got better. (even if that came with it's own set of problems)

The current scene around them seems to have built a weird cargo-culting idealized picture of that time and the technology that fits in no part to the actual reality. I mentioned in earlier posts I was hoping when development of systems of that performance grade became an affordable hobbist thing, it could kickstart an interest in open and alternative, self-made platforms, but it just sort of doesn't happen even though all the parts are there. There's no creativity or walking-off the beaten path, just consumerism. It's like people just don't have the attention span or can't imagine pouring time into something they can't immediately market to someone for money. Hustle culture is a cancer.

Link 'em if ya got em. The only one I'm following who gets into stuff like that is this dude, but his presentation is so dry I have a hard time paying attention: https://www.youtube.com/@renerebe/videos

Some IBM compatibles are interesting and seemingly ignored. I see a distinct lack of content relating to 486 era freestanding servers and non-Ethernet networking. I suppose you actually have to have the hardware in order to make a good video about it though, and there are a lot less early 90s servers surviving out there than there are compact Macs, and Baby AT towers.

I like what calebretro has been doing the past few months with the SPARC servers and SunRay thin clients, as well as the more recent 90s enterprise networking stuff.

I'd really like to see VAXen, myself.

He's extremely passionate about this stuff, and isn't shitting out easy content for the sake of views like a lot of people on YouTube.

See also: ncommander, a former firefighter and former Ubuntu dev who is also passionate about archival and who does archeology on actually interesting and uncommon stuff. Currently inactive but he'll probably be back sometime.

He's always been a bit weird, fairly attractive gay guy with a strong hint of the 'tism. I don't let someone's social media cloud my view of their YouTube content. I don't really give a shit what he's posting on Mastodon. To me he's a thid tier YouTuber who's videos I watch when I've got nothing better to do. They're usually interesting to some degree, and usually moreso than what I thought they'd be before clicking.

See also: uxwbill, the least retarded among his siblings. He more or less stopped doing YouTube videos though, right around the time he went to school to learn HVAC.

Gravis harbors troons and makes other poor life choices, and named himself after a bargain basement gamepad company, but I think his videos are alright. He's clearly trying to tell a story with each one, and if that isn't your thing I could see why you think his videos are too long. For me that's the point of his content, the story.

He's too fat for me though, I wouldn't do him in a million years.
It's like people just don't have the attention span or can't imagine pouring time into something they can't immediately market to someone for money.
I have so many ideas for projects, many of which are above my paygrade and would definitely force me to learn new skills and buy more tools. I'm all for that kind of thing, pretty much what I live for. Too bad I literally don't have time.

I figured out he was gay and pretty lefty a while ago... and I sort of don't care. The videos are funny autism.

The closest he got to showing it in the videos was that bible thing and that's been a well known way to get cheap bad tapes for ages.

Okay and he once went on about how his NSC Jetta was better than the same-year Golf because it had more space or something which proves he's not even a good VW fan.

I need to watch those. I could do some old-networking myself but I'd have to find some truly strange things. Not even just the hardware but the software. the PS/2 50Z I used to work on ages back with the Token Ring Remote Source-Route Bridge program on it, that'd be interesting... But I'd have to severely luck out finding the software.

I think @GustavoDíazOrdaz is butthurt because people aren't respecting his dead kike cult.

You can erase or record over worthless media, or you can throw it in the trash. These things are dime a dozen much like Christmas LPs. You cant give this shit away. Realistically no Christian is losing out because VWatheist blanked a Holy tape. It's no different from yanking erasable PROMs out of some obsolete, uninteresting and truly worthless equipment.

I myself recorded over plenty of shit when I was younger and blank media was hard to come by, and I didn't lose a second of sleep over it. Compact cassettes, VHS tapes, floppy disks, even PlayStation memory cards were not safe from me.

He used to have a B5 Passat TDI which is a pretty nice car. I stopped giving a shit about his opinion of cars when he got a new VW. They're pretty garbage cars, the newer they are the more shitty they get. Especially the Jetta.

I had a loner Jetta 1.4T with 18k for a short time, and that fucker left me stranded in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday morning. It was acting like it was running out of gas. Got it to restart a couple times, made it another mile down the road and then it died for good. I assume the high pressure fuel pump had grenaded or something similar. I got some help getting it back home. The dealership sent a shirtless barefoot hobo in a tow truck to pick it up.

The car overall felt cheap and cost-reduced to the max. Slushbox went ok, not great but it worked. Bluetooth was buggy as fuck, a staple of German Engineering. Doors were extra hollow. Had all the modern safety bullshit. Got similar fuel economy to my TDI 6MT, but with a lot less torque, a lot more downshifting in the hills, and it definitely would have tanked with a lot of weight in the car.

The VAX and by extension also the PDP11 and PDP7 would be very interesting to me too. DEC sure did make a lot of cool things.
But I just love 90s RISC processors and workstations in general. It's remarkable to me that x86 survived when Alpha could emulate it faster, using fewer gates. Maybe Itanium was really a galaxy-brain level plot to secure Intel's survival through AMD's development of AMD64, rather than a genuine attempt to supplant it?
