I don't think you're doing anything wrong, I think DMs are always going to naturally feel safer to talk more casually than public forums. I always assumed people preferred using DMs for more normal conversations over using the off topic boards to avoid being doxxed by the insane vengeful troons that stalk the forums.

Also consider that KF forum culture has always hammered "do not power level" and I think even in boards where it is allowed, people tend to hold back and feel like they can't talk about themselves as much as they can in chat/DMs.

How autists even keep up with the dms is beyond me. I didn't immediately leave one, came back what couldn't have been 10 mins later and it already had 5+ new pages of posts. Never understood the appeal.

Most people used it like chat where you just skip the old messages.

Though it also became a running joke for a bit to try to get people to read every page.

The most annoying aspect of the DM chain system is that any participant is able to invite more, which often results in unwelcome participants such as @Madre Muerte wrecking the discussion or spamming the thread. It would make more sense that only the DM OP or OP and first participant can invite more.

Maybe there are concerns about hypothetical Discord drama seeping into Kiwi Farms with Null having no way to properly moderate or deal with it because Discord is its own separate entity. It just makes things more complicated. At least with group DMs still in tact, if something comes up it can be addressed on the site.

I'll DM people sometimes, if I have a question about something. Everyone is so nice/helpful. Imagine abusing DM to be an asshole. I'm still PTSD from sending a /msg on IRC only to get k-lined instantly. Most people don't understand the Internet and have no decorum. These are the times we now occupy.

I post in the more loose boards like Q&A and off-topic. Those are fine if I want to discuss, share or participate on some event with people that share my same interests on the threads I follow. But if I want to start N towers, do some shitposting or just talk for a bit I tend to use dms so as to not clog up or shit up the threads with meaningless posts (even if they are loosely moderated). And I don't use general chat because I find it boring and gay. But that may just be me.

I actually think it has a lot to do with the way notifications work. DMs show up under the envelope icon so they're segregated out, whereas threads just show up under the bell and blend in with the rest of gen pop. This makes (some) people pay attention to DMs way more, with makes them proceed at a rapid clip.

To add to this, DM's notify for every new message whereas thread discussions notify general activity only if you've recently checked the thread. It can be easier to lose track of conversational threads among other unrelated watched threads as compared to the distinctly segregated DM's.

Agree entirely with @Breadbassket, but this is also a website. It works in the best interest of the site to keep the traffic here, regardless if its drama or not.

The two reasons I see that people go to DM chains, beyond "it's not publicly available to the Internet at large" are:

• They want to hide from specific users who annoy them or shit up their threads or whatever (think A&H autists hiding from HHH or similar)
• They want to indirectly avoid moderation

I'm not sure those can easily be fixed, except perhaps by a new non-Internet public board that members can see, but OPs are basically mods in their own thread

It's a discussion forum. This is not an issue. There's multiple off-topic boards and I'd like to see those grow so the site has some stability and activity even if we're in a slump content wise.

People seem forget that around the start of covid there was a several month long slump of nothing being featured because there was nothing to feature, so I support this.
