Private/Direct Messages Chain Spam Issue

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

Now that I think about it, Null is becoming a true 4chan janny. Doing everything he can to drive up the quality of contributions, not the quantity of it.

Next up, everyone will be Anonymous so that people don't sperg about other users, but sperg about whether or not Anon B is Anon A or not.

And the end goal, Kiwi Farms never migrates to Ruforo. Instead it migrates to Infinity Next, and we become an image board.
4chan content is at an absolute fucking bottom, worse than it's ever been.

That’s my point. I’m not complaining, but Null asked why people don’t use the off-topic boards more. I suspect this is the biggest reason.
I don't think we should be taking any efforts to make people like that more comfortable than they already are. If anything, I think we should be warning them that "hey retards, even in DMs your shit will get doxed and mad trannies will call up your boss and the guy you disagreed with four months ago will change his pfp to your face".

It would be very funny if site engagement plummeted because Null disabled the biggest Skinner-box driving site engagement, and all out of some intensely autistic idealism about how users should or should not engage with his site.
I find it slightly amusing that the reason (dms don't affect reaction score) is something that only people who have been in dms for a while even find out. Most people don't even realise for quite a while.

This is causing a shitshow though, which is fun.

The real reasons for people wanting to use dms more hasn't changed. It's a couple of things.

1 - posts aren't visible to the wider web/unregistered users, and can't be searched.
2 - unlike chat, it can be gone back through and caught up on if you missed anything.

Until there is something comparable on the visible side of the forum, dmfags will undoubtedly continue.

Doing it in DMs instead won't stop people from doxing you. Like didn't we all just witness the same giant drama explosion as things from DMs are revealed for all to see? You shouldn't say things that could dox you on the forum or in forum DMs, period.
oh i rarely speak in DMs at all

Hell, I confused all off-topic boards with A&N, in terms of Null's dislike, and made something of an effort to focus on laughing at fools over using those boards.

me, when the group chat gets leaked

the reaction score was a nice way of quickly figuring out who's a dumbass and who isn't

That's the use I got out of it. Somebody shits a thread with a retarded post, and one quick glance to see a reaction score of -100 immediately tells me that wasn't just a shit take, but they are a complete faggot.

I never thought I'd be defending KF's Karma system, but the reaction score was a nice way of quickly figuring out who's a dumbass and who isn't before the introduction of the Troublesome Violet Triangle, especially if the aforementioned dumbass is a freshly made sock account with a post count too low to get picked up by the jannies.
"i judge people by their reddit karma instead of by the content of their posts"

I was invited to 2 DM groups like that. At the first one I barely engaged and at the second one I talked a bit more.
I wanted to knew/talk to more users since I am still Fresh Meat.

I loved veiled threats like this.

I am pragmatic, not idealistic, and the problem is that there are problems emerging from DM chains that would not happen if people posted in the main forum more often. I'd like to see what is going wrong that people prefer sprawling message exchanges.
I can see the reasons:

1. You can post random stuff.
2. It feels more private from people without accounts.

People like the privacy of DMs because they are lonely and want to connect on a deeper level with another user on the forum, because logic would dictate that they must have at least a little in common. Others like it because lots of funny things happen in DMs. A small town feel of group DMs always feels better then the sprawling metropolis of the general forum to them when you just want to be chill and shoot the shit.

Personally I do not believe chat is good at capturing this because A) if you show up mid conversation it is impossible to join because you cant look at the history like a dm. B) most chats are just talking about boring ass shit.
