The ~Aesthetic~ thread - General thread for aesthetic trends including but not limited to fashion, art, and home design.

Not really a visual trend and I don't know of any other thread where I can express my interest in this "style" but I really like apocalyptic visuals. I'm not talking about Fallout style stuff but more of war-torn hellscapes.
I really like these two paintings from Albert Goodwin.

Another example of the stuff I find really interesting is when it's a familiar feeling place that has been destroyed from warfare. A prime example of this type of stuff is the Russian invasion of America in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), there's a certain strange beauty in the White House being transformed into a battlefield or American suburbs being occupied by an invading force.

All of the images are from the campaign remaster of MW2. If there's some obscure name for this style or whatever you'd call it, please let me know.

Most of my home looks like this. Right now it’s called “organic modern”, it used to be called “Scandi” and sometimes it’s called “japandi”. I don’t really care, since it been more or less my style or a while and those terms have come and gone. “Sad beige mom” is also catching on, but that’s usually from gen-z teens who think plastic crawling ivy and LED string lights are the pinnacle of design, or dangerhairs who won’t be reproducing anyways (definitely expose babies young children to bright colors though, it helps their brains develop).

I really like minimalism, the problem is that:
1. It is used everywhere by all corporations, leaving all possible identity or personality behind.
2. Most of the time corpos don't implement an actual good minimalist style, but just lazy and cheap design.

I wish we could just move on from the current minimalism era, but this style is not only an excuse to make lazy designs but also it makes everything more "efficient". Companies want everything to be as quick and easy as possible for the masses to understand how to use their products, and minimalism is perfect for that.
Again, I like minimalism, but I want this stupid trend to stop already.

I’m seeing a lot of hate for old redder toned wood finishes. All being stripped and paint washed white. People who damage antique furniture by painting it should be shot.
(Yes yes if it’s not an amazing piece and it’s totally fucked otherwise then fine, but I’ve just watched some twit remove the old deep finish on some parquet flooring to leave it looking like ikea and it’s sad…)

Well that's odd. They always make me sad.
Without PLing, what kind of environment did you grow up in? What was the sky like?
I did grow up in a relatively flat area. In car rides I liked looking out into the distance at radio towers blinking at night. Think it's similar to those liminal spaces pictures, I get a strange wistful mysterious kind of feeling.

That is how I feel about people who paint exterior brick, or interior brick. The texture and color gradients of masonry are interesting, especially as it ages, and it often needs no maintenance other than tuckpointing every two decades or so. By painting brick, not only do you often ruin the point of having it in the first place, but it will look even shittier as the paint wears away, so you have to do it every few years.

Bricks can come in a lot of colors including bright white or black because of the mineral composition they make them with, so it would be better to get bricks in a color you like instead of painting them.

Instagram is now serving me people literally bleaching wooden furniture with bleach and I hate it.
I tried to use instagram as a source of interesting aesthetics but it always shows me the most boring/normie shit imaginable. The same goes with everything else on that platform.

I've just bought a new bed and needed to get some new bedding and I had a very clear idea of what I wanted and I was shocked at how difficult it was to find it! I’m so sick of everything being white and minimalist.

My mattress is deeper than standard and I wanted fitted sheet sets with a matching duvet cover, 100% bamboo +300tc. My bedroom walls and carpet are neutral and my furniture is gray so I was looking for deep, bold colors to complement my curtains. I like my living areas to be moody with rich textiles, crystal chandeliers and mixed metals.

Virtually everything I found at first was either hospital white or concrete cell gray and anything dyed a bold color or with a pattern that didn’t cost the earth was either polyester or a low thread count cotton. I had been looking for berry tones but finally had to settle for teal and dark blue, they're nice and soft but slightly too big so hopefully they will shrink in the wash.

Is that like the sad beige trend stuff and the super organised pantries?

Hannah Alonzo - Influencer Insanity series (YouTube Link to playlist) is someone I enjoy talking about this even though I like the organised pantry aesthetic (the super organised fridges annoy me though)

I think my aesthetic is just "modern" with coloured pieces throughout.

I have an apartment that looks similar to this:

And I like dystopian artwork like:

That’s the one! WHY WHY WHY is everyone stripping wood right back then bleaching it and paint washing it. It looks hideous.
The amber colour the solvent based varnishes go is nice.

Next has coloured sheets that aren’t too pricey and they have deep fit as well. Not sure if they have the sheets matching the duvet though

Found out recently that there is a name for the style of things I dig. It's called "Cassette Futurism." Effectively, the 70's to 90's idea of what the future would be. Where the tech and aesthetic evolved from the (current) 80's. So think, CRT tvs just get bigger and fancier, cassettes are still reliably used, big beige boxes for supercomputers. If you want an idea, anything from the OG Blade Runner or Alien or the like. Or Star Wars. Anime used it a lot, stuff like Cowboy Bebop predicting that you'd be flying spaceships using big boopy button panels and Vector graphics.
