Sony hate thread

I expect Sony to buy Arrowhead and drive them into the dirt. Looking in my crystal ball here's what I predict for Sonys studios

Naughty ZOG
-Last Of Us 3 after their superhero IP gets cancelled
-Neil doubles down but the project goes into tailspin and is either cancelled or flops

Media Molecule
-gets shut down 5 years into development of another guaranteed flop, devs probably shit talk modern Sony leadership after getting the boot

VR Studios
-shuttered

Guerilla
-Makes another Horizon with further diminishing returns
-Attempt to bring back SOCOM/Killzone/Resistance fails spectacularly

Bend
-Shuttered

Santa Monica
-New IP is cancelled and they're made to continue puppeteering Kratos' corpse as has happened multiple times already

Suckerpunch
- GoT 2 releases to less fanfare than the first

Insomniac
-Continues pumping out capeshit with no real impact or surprise

Bungie
-Continues being an embarrassment to their legacy like they have for the last decade

No Name Studios (Firewalk, Haven, etc)
-release flops nobody cares about
I think you're right about everything except GoT. There's a possibility that it will be good but we'll see.

You forgot San Diego Studio
Because, well, everyone does.
MLB The Show 25 through 99
Doesn't look like they've had a title other than that since 2017.

My favorite era of graphics whoring was when it was all about water physics and reflections.

All this bullshit about lighting is nothing compared to those glory days. Bring back the glut of tropical/beach games please.
I came the first time i played Metroid Prime and saw the rain drops hitting the visor when i moved through or looked up in a rainy area, same for the reflection of Samus' face on the inside of the visor. Pure magic.

You also forgot Polyphony Digital
Expect a Gran Turismo 8 in 2028 or later, since GT games take 5-6+ years to make. And GT fans will eat that Kaz goyslop up, HARD, no matter what stupid gimmick Kaz thinks up next for racing games in narcissistic fashion. And I don't know if it's either Kaz or Sony, that would make sure that PC ports of GT games won't be a thing.

I expect them to attempt a copy of Forza Horizon and either fumble it horribly or end up missing some kind of big shift in terms of opinion on the formula. I expect Sony and MS to both continue swirling the quality drain. I keep up with most first party studios and all the horses from both teams seem weak.

MS studio predictions
343
-Next Halo takes forever to come out and is invariably disappointing
-Halo Battle Royale flops
-They cancel some more stuff fans actually want

The Coalition
-Gears 6 ends up being serviceable but largely forgettable with not enough innovation to revitalize the series
-Gears Tactics 2 never
-New IP is dead

Ninja Theory
-Hellblade 2 will be eviscerated due to mismanaged expectations and the gimmick wearing off (I personally like Hellblade but I see the sequel being shat on for legit reasons)
-All their side projects like Mara and Insight amount to nothing but tech demos

Playground
-Horizon 6 will be set in some shit hole like Africa instead of Japan for absolutely no reason
-Fable will be largely soulless

Double Fine
-Boring experimental shit on par with more polished Steam Greenlight games
Compulsion
-South of Midnight will suck ass, one of the first games confirmed to have SBI working on it from inception

Undead Labs
-SoD3 will launch buggy as fuck and they will eventually fix it after like 5 years of patches just like with SoD2.
-Class 3 will never happen

InXile
-Clockwork Revolution comes out and is somehow everything people wanted from Bioshock Infinite before it was neutered (source: Their team is almost exclusively white dudes and Wasteland 3 was really good)

Activision/Blizzard
-*prolonged shart sounds*

Bethesda
-*prolonged shart sounds outside of Tango Game works which farts beautiful symphonies*

The content is just too much and largely not as good as in Y7 and other games in the series preceding it.
I spent 20 hours on Dondoko Island where you eventually unlock an online mode where you can visit other player's islands. I also did the optional procedurally generated dungeons, all the side quests, and most of the minigames. The amount of optional crap is mindboggling. They're a benchmark for how much content a bigger studio could put in a game if they have their shit together. You mentioned you're on Chapter 13. There are only 14, so you could probably finish it up in 5-10 hours.

I did most of the side content (Sujimon League done as soon as possible, all substories except one i think, played all mini games but not to completion on the list as i did not like most of the new ones) apart from Dondoko, spent too long in the dungeons and racked up the hours there i guess. The last Yakuza game with this much content was 5, though it did it much better and more fun, i dislike the quasi-collectathon aspect of Y8. But yeah, i agree with your sentiment, this game showcases perfectly what a studio can actually put in contentwise if they don't blow their budget on useless shit. Also proper QA, the only bigger bug i can think of was stats not carrying over between jobs and some fps drops for certain PC configs (haven't experienced it on mine) and both got fixed relatively quickly.

I would've posted this in the Yakuza thread but i don't want any spoilers before i finished Y8, haven't played Gaiden yet either.

I know I will! I've dumped hundreds of hours into Gran Turismo 5, 6, Sport and 7. Polyphony are strange, but easily the best studio Sony has. I think the language barrier has insulated them from western brainrot. There used to be loads of racing game studios in Japan, but they've all gone defunct and their staff now largely works at Polyphony. For example, the people who made Enthusia Professional Racing at Konami now work at Polyphony after they got shut down.

The Yakuza team made Gaiden in 6 months while also working on Yakuza 8. Gaiden has its own unique side activities, so you can dump another 20+ hours into it if you want. I heard recently that Final Fantasy 4 was made in 9 months. Here we see proof it's still possible to make games that fast.

Yakuza benefits a lot from re-using the same city, to be fair.

Yes, especially Gaiden. It has maybe 4 new locations, and I bet they could re-use textures for most of them. The most impressive thing is the huge amount of pure game content, and also their model scanning, animation and cutscene quality. I think their PS3 cutscene models look better than the shit we saw in Immortals of Aveum, Jedi Survivor, Spiderman 2 and so on.

I like most of the character models in the latter two games, but Insomniac's tech really needs an overhaul. It's not keeping up with current-gen standards.

How many engine programmers have we lost to HRT? The budgets are astronomical, the staff counts for many modern games are 3000+ people when I look on Mobygames. Starfield cost 400$ million, Spiderman 2 315$ million, from the leaks Wolverine is expected to cost $300 million, and Spiderman 3 expected to cost $385 million. I read an article about the development of Forza 8 that sounded very similar to what Microsoft did to Halo Infinite. "But the key here is what Campos describes as the "18/6 Rule." Basically, the developers that Microsoft would hire on a contract basis—that is to say, for a fixed term without healthcare or benefits—could only work for a maximum of 18 months before being required to take six off." The contractors themselves said this is insanely inefficient, because around the time they master the tools their contract runs out and they have no time to teach new hires how everything works. On the positive side, these practices more or less guarantee financial failure, so that's good!

I think Kaz is autistically possessive of GT, which has also helped prevent shoehorned diversity stuff from appearing in the games.

You're right. When Driveclub threatened GT as the premium Sony racer, he used all his tricks of corporate politics to kill the studio. He's on the Sony board, and Polyphony is his life's work.
He's one of the many people that are interesting in collecting checks from ESG, Vanguard and BlackRock
