Things did fall apart, it just took 10 years for people to notice just how bad they have gotten. Empires don't fall apart overnight either, and yet you can also pinpoint the exact moment, in retrospective, when it all went to shit. Is it just me or is the ugly woman thing not that they're ugly exactly, they are ugly but they're also manly. I dislike overtly sexualized characters in video games in general (though it can work as part of the author's vision or when being a massive slut is part of the character's personality, it gets boring when every woman must be like that), but the current trend is women so ugly it is immersion breaking. Why can't they just look normal? Just like the original gamergate; trying to manufacture a consensus with lots of virtue signaling and angry articles about how awful gamers are, trying to make the movement radioactive in polite company. I've said this before, but I remember seeing a post back when quoting Felicia Day condemning GG with the comment "Give it up, Gamers, your heroes have abandoned you!". I was a journo-truster back during 1.0, but even so, the insanity of many of the identical hit pieces, the strawman clip art like angry mouths shouting (just like the one a few pages pack), etc really seemed off to me even then.

But so far the wave of total and apocalyptic censorship that marked 1.0 still hasn't come...the curator list is still up, with a third of a million members, with Steam indicating they might restore the forums once things have settled down, even the discord is still up (last I heard), though heavily neutered (frankly a good thing), and they haven't managed to claim scalp after scalp like in 1.0 just yet, and Twitter community notes even allow a limited right of reply to the gators this time around. All that makes it harder for grifters to grift (on both sides). Mercante and friends aren't getting the harassment they desperately need to remain relevant, and can only drum up so much on their own.

I know a lot of forums have censored the topic, but they've set their own victory condition of Total Gamer Death and are failing to achieve it.

I'm feeling the Hogwarts Legacy boycott energy here. The line they have set for themselves is getting the curator list banned. Maybe that could have happened in 1.0, but it's looking really unlikely in the current environment. This is what Operation Disrespectful Nod was supposed to be -- just don't buy the games, which seem to mostly suck for non-SJ reasons too. You don't need a movement for that, and it may even be counterproductive.

Meanwhile, the list seems to be having an effect, with Flintlock reaching out to be taken off the list. This is why they don't mind gators angry but can't stand them organized -- it means they can turn that anger into having an effect without sticking their necks out to get chopped off. Even when these games fail for non-SJ reasons, it still risks sending the message to execs that journos don't have to be your audience, journos are over.

Woke capital can try to nudge all the other products off the shelves, but a hard shove would be very expensive, let alone sustaining it over time. Until Valve falls, they can't win this. Send Gaben a vegetable basket and pray for his good health.

I don't think gators are ever going to get a victory parade where the industry unceremoniously dumps ESG and everyone stands up and claps, but it doesn't take much controversy for the big companies to quietly back away from SBI, and that sends a message to the others just like it. If nothing else, you can accelerate the collapse, giving Mercante more guides to write and more layoffs to the literal howler monkeys. Just because you're not that powerful doesn't mean you're powerless; they want you to feel that way so you give up your power.
