The more recent DOOM games are boring dross. I just couldn't immerse myself.
2016 was a boring piece of shit partly because lol unskippable, multi-minute cutscenes and HL2 walk-talk segments in a DOOM game. And partly because Doomguy is a legless cripple carrying nerf guns unless you enjoy opening the automap every 20 seconds to collect all of the upgrade points, do all of the dumb level challenges, and collect enough fartgas particulate to get arbitrary level points to get more upgrades. Also the level design was atrocious with barely any interesting arenas, and an unbroken loop of locked into arena > hallway with 5 enemies and collectables > locked into arena > hallway with 5 enemies and collectables.
Eternal was somewhat less shit because you can skip all of the cutscenes, and it's mostly interesting maps and arenas. All of the other problems arealmost the same, and also they added more platforming for some godforsaken reason. Your weapons also got more interesting and their options slightly more balanced, but there were still meme picks like the auto-shotgun or minigun shield. They also cranked up the gimmicks to 11, between the even higher reliance on the chainsaw, the flamethrower, ice grenade, blood punch, crucible, sneed chuck, etc.. The low amount of enemies in a fight at one time also hits even harder, because every single arena in the game has to always have at least 2 or 3 regular zombies spawned, purely so you can chainsaw them for ammo.
The DLCs for Eternal also had an actual soundtrack, done by Andrew Hulshult instead of Mick Gordon trying to obliterate a dial-up modem with his cock. I swear, that man used to make good music, but ever since he got picked up by Bethesda/Zenimax he's made nothing but garbage.
Anyways, I fully believe that Serious Sam TFE and TSE are the natural evolution of the DOOM formula, where it's still just a dead simple game about running diagonally at supersonic speeds, killing a thousand enemies per map and calling the game developers faggots when you get greased by a hitscanner hidden on a high ledge.
