I've had some faith in Comicsgate, but, hahaha, oh wow, are you fucking kidding me? There's just so much shit that anyone who wants to make comics in the USA must clear out and clean up to merely sell their stuff as a comic book artist. Is it that time again? Yes it is!! It's I Love Beef's US Comic Book Industry Spergouts!

The entire problem with this entire fucking thing is that the world has moved on. A new age calls for a new way of doing things. Oh sure, capes and traditional paperbacks are still around, but their rallying cry, "First we lose our comics, then we lose our country!" I haven't heard that kind of shit since DC made Cyborg Robama and Teen Titans the amerime. No matter what butthurt little closet jealous glory days clingy fags says otherwise, the 1996 US Comics Crash should be treated as the equivalent of a mass destruction incident on par with the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event or a global nuclear apocalypse, or if more down to earth, the sacking of Rome or the Peloponesian War marking the end of an empire. And I'm going to come out and say it: after the US comic giants having copped out to the censors and moralfags for years for the sake of its own bottom line, do you seriously think that they'd have any integrity left to save them after fucking killing Superman? Rock and Roll and Metal fought back against the morality in media fuckers, the fuck wasn't getting comics to do the same out in the Supreme Court? I only feel bad the same way some small time petty criminal gets fucking massacred being in the wrong place at the wrong time in business they have no way in hell they can deal with: what a disappointing waste of life.

If there's anyone, fucking anyone, who wants to make new comics here in the States, they'd best do something so revolutionary, so ground breaking and so influential that it can clear out the metaphoric wastelands of ruined cities, radioactive waste, and tainted scorched earth that composes the very foundation of the "rebuilt" comics industry after 1996, and compete head to head, not all fucking pussyfooted and petty punkass bitch, with the Japanese anime and manga industry and even the European comics industry. Remember, superheroes are only alive today because of movies these days, not the comics they're based on, and then there's the national stigma that comics and reading are for nerds, and then, we have the lovely problem of how comics about superheroes have problems with characterization and depictions of morality. And that's not even counting the other shit, like how no one is willing to face the truth that the industry fucked up and is pretending nothing fucking happened.

tl;dr You want to save comics? You'd best give a fuck enough to not do the same lackluster ignoramus hubris huffing pride jerking copium jenkem shit that's been repeated again and again blindly. When it comes to Piskor, I've read his suicide note over and over and the conclusion I keep coming to is that he is basically admitting that all the accusations are accurate, and mostly blames the women for the situations or delivering information about them out of context. (Fair enough.)

Even so, none of the accusations are actually damning. It's a shame he went out over them.

I guess that's why I had thought there could even be more to it: in his shoes I would have tried to prove that none of it mattered and push through it.

In his case, according to his note, he wrote his will the day after the accusations from Molly D came in, before the dust had even settled. He'd already decided.

Something I was wondering about though; he doesn't really have much of a connection to #Comicsgate on the whole, does he? It's drama of a level and type that clearly belongs in this thread if it doesn't belong anywhere else, but from all I've read about this it seems like he was an outsider to all that on the whole. And still got cancelled all the same.

Someone wrote a summary of CG on the open thread of the Blocked and reported substack yesterday. Maybe it’s useful for some other poor oldfag who still wistfully reads Hate. You young’uns are confusing.

I wanted to write here about "ComicsGate" and Ed Piskor. Comicsgate basically came to its final conclusion Monday. Comicsgate basically started when the Cancel Pigs (A small cadre of mostly known 10-20 mostly professional writers and artists in the comics industry including Alex di Campi, Ramon Villalobos, Heather Antos, Heidi McDonald and Tom King amongst others) started bullying fellow artists, customers and comic store owners for not being progressive enough.

This all has been going on for nearly a decade now. But most recently a 21 year old came out and accused comic book artist and writer Ed Piskor of messaginer her some flirty messages on Instagram in 2020. As far as anyone saw, none of it was explicit and no pictures were exchanged and no meetups happened in real life. She did not present the full exchanges so we lose all context. Another woman said she willingly gave him blowjobs because she alleged he said he would offer her connections which he may have failed to deliver on. But does not allege it was not consensual (if it even happened).

Now coincidentally this all came up as he was supposed to have an art exhibition in the coming weeks. As these allegations started, people also started trying to paint Ed as racist (This account popped up the day after the allegations and has done nothing but basically denigrate him since https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/1bn134c/comment/kwpb2tt/). Ed's seminal work is something called Hip Hop Family Tree which is basically an illustrated history of the origins of HipHop. Its pretty safe to say this work was a labor of love. Ed loved hiphop and hiphop culture and wasn't racist in the least but this work has had success and as Ed started getting targeted people were looking to find other ways to denigrate his character.

Now, this isn't a new thing in Comic Books. I grew up reading them in the early 90s and then stopped because it was one of those things that just wasn't popular and didn't want to defend it. In college I started picking up a few and finally decided to get back into it around 2011-2013. I was really excited as I always loved the art and it was fun to go back to the thing I wish I hadn't left behind.

But I soon discovered it was not the same industry. All of a sudden all the female characters were drawn exactly the same, same haircut, same body type. They started making them "realistic" because how would girls ever want to read superhero comics otherwise? (Forget the fact that that doesn't seem to stop boys from looking at unrealistic characters who have muscles on top of muscles on top of muscles, feel free to read up on Bigger Stronger Faster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigger,_Stronger,_Faster*). They started turning established characters into minorities, women and making established characters that had over 40 years of history gay or bisexual. Now let me clarify the issue isn't with adding new minority characters but simply giving the costume of existing characters. In the early 90s they actually created a bunch of new diverse characters and no one was bothered. But the difference was now they were changing existing ones to reach out to a small or non-existent audience at the expense of their current one.

Eventually fans and even some artists started complaining mostly through Twitter and Youtube. This started a war with. many of the heavily left leaning comic book professionals. They started calling fellow creators Nazi's and pushing them out of DC and Marvel. People that had 10-20 year careers were now pushed out of the mainstream. The Cancel Pigs started going after fans, labeling them Nazis, Racists, Transphobes etc. Now part of this I believe is that Marvel Comics had been purchased by Disney in 2012. Originally Marvel comics needed to sell comics. They actually needed to sell books to customers. But once Disney purchased them, they merely became an IP factory. More useful for what could be turned into Merch and Movies then publishing. The Entire Annual Comics Industry is valued less than What Avengers Endgame made at the Box Office. The long and the short of it is that Discovery/Warner/HBO which owns DC comics (Batman/Superman) and Disney who owns Marvel (Spider-Man, The Avengers) doesn't really need nor want to spend time micro managing the tiny fraction of revenue that comes from the comic book industry.

So for years the Cancel Pig pros have been attacking everyone including minority creators like Jae Lee. In 2020 Jae Lee was on a weekend trip to mourn his recently passed Dog Loki. Fellow comic creator Tom King accused Jae Lee of being a part of Comicsgate for being paid to create a comic book cover for a creator who was one of main instigators of Comicsgate Ethan Van Sciver. Jae Lee just did this work because that's his job. His job isn't to do a political inquisition for everyone who hires him to make art. Tom King said he didn't want Jae Lee to do any covers for his own series Rorsach. This blew up and Jae Lee was forced to get on and defend himself on a weekend he was mourning his recently passed dog Loki, amidst a witch Trial. A minor writeup is below.

Trans creator Mags Visaggio has accused Scott Snyder of emotional labor and has complained about Sean Gordon Murphy not following through on helping him pay for part of his transition. Heather Antos called out Scott Snyder (who capitulated) for not taking the men in comics pledge while he was out of town on a camping trip with family.

There are other examples and people have been dicks on both sides of the aisle, but ultimately this outcome was inevitable the way things have been going. Anyone who's tried to stop this stuff like Mark Millar (who's written many series and had multiple comics adapted into box office successes like Kickass and The Kingsman) have been attacked viciously.
