Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

Just want to say watching the leaked konosuba episode on YOUTUBE is a new level of stupid I thought was impossible. It's not even out yet! Bet Nux will bitch if/when it gets copyright claimed.

Allow me to break it down
>Black flash's happen whenever the author wants them to.

It's so dogshit. Someone in this thread I can't remember tried to convince me it was the best thing ever, but it's really not. The more cursed energy has been explained, the less it makes any sense. It had cursed abilities become an even worse and lopsided version of kekkei genkai with cursed energy being a confusing blend of chakra and Bleach's spiritual whatever nonsense. More people should've listened to Terry Davis: keep it simple because something complex doesn't mean smart or well put together, really it's more of a dysfunctional mess.
Its amazing how all MHA stories are ruined the more AFO is involved, like was it really that hard to have an old villain contrast All Might who just wanted to pass the torch to a successor? Act 1 AFO was at least more consistent and didn't just become bootleg Aizen who single handily ruins the entire story.
Stopped reading after the Shibuya arc ended. Couldn't comprehend any of the visuals, thought the powers were all bullshit, and I was pissed at how they killed off Nobara. Not a Good Naruto in my book.
To add to the discussion, who is gonna make a sure ass bet that Tomura's "original quirk" is gonna be something either so ridiculously overpowered, or so mind numblingly sappy (or fucking both) that we're gonna be seeing so many of the fans sperg the fuck out about how "What IF Tomura had been a hero".

We’re probably not going to see it. It’s confirmed to be a copy of Overhaul so my bet is that he’ll get the other half and be a “le true hero”

But Horikoshi is known to do the dumbest shit possible so who knows

Not like it matters. Fanfiction is the only legacy this show will have soon, they can have whatever lets them imagine a better show. And it's not like Shigaraki hasn't already been overloaded with a doomstack of other bullshit powers for the last four years. Plus Decay has just become Overhaul, and nothing's going to outstrip that in overpoweredness.

Aho Girl was pretty funny. The one time an author actually tried to make the high school setting hilarious. Yoshiko is not afraid of going after what she wants in life as simplistic as it may be, and the comedic relief between her and forgettable asian male protagonist #435274234234 never got old. She wasn't afraid of expressing her feelings and it was a breathe of fresh air that it even mocked all of the typical anime stereotypes being too afraid to do that at all while remaining lighthearted and not rugpulling the viewer like a lot of anime love to do when they start to take themselves seriously. She is such a lovable idiot.

Yoshiko would be the ultimate banana farmer and probably even be able to grow them on Helghan if she was motivated enough.

I might have been a little hard on the latter Frieren episodes, when you can just power through them on a rewatch it isn't bad, even with the lack of Himmel content. We get to learn more about the magic system and (more importantly) the world. The scene with the mural of the Unified kingdom was great and had nice music. If Frieren is the Lord of the Rings then I'm guessing the Unified era is its Silmarillion.

It looks Roman in aesthetic... and there appears to be a distinctly elf-eared angelic figure next to the solar-crowned king. Is it the Goddess? Is it Serie? At the very least it has me interested.

Kind of disappointed with the first episode of the new Bartender, since it's practically just the first episode of the old anime but not as good. It wasn't a bad episode but it lacks the calmer atmosphere and introspection that the first episode of the older anime had. When you have something to directly compare it to like this it just ends up a little meh. Not sure if following episodes will follow the same stories as the first anime or not.

I thought it would spend more time with him bartending, with him actually making the Glass of God that was requested by the girl's boss. I assumed that he would be taking over that bar, but now I'm left to wonder if that will be a season finale thing if it ever happens.

Aho Girl is one of the anime that bring a smile to my face every time it is mentioned. Such a fun retarded anime.

You can't watch them back to back though. Too much stupid

Note: in reincarnated as a slime 2x13, when Rimuru introduces Veldora to his people and they start cheering, you can see a couple babies thrown into the air. Wtf.

It has been a long while since I watched the original Bartender, so I sure as shit can't remember pretty much anything about it, but I thought the first episode of the new one was serviceable enough. At least enough for me to give a few more episodes a try.

For me, Tenchi Muyo wins out, but Saber Marionette J is still special to me and is something worth checking out.
Saber Marionette J is on my watchlist. I saw clips from it reposted somewhere on social media, and really liked the art style and animation for it.

That's what happened to me, and I mainly think it's because I was always more interested in space stuff and Transformers, so I went to that era because it had the best kind of that stuff. Even the mecha anime of that era which may seem toyetic can tell very engaging stories -- just look at Goldran, Dancouga, Dendoh, or Baldios; they're one of a kind and difficult to tropify. The "it has to be mecha to sell toys" restriction also fostered a lot of creativity, such as Gundam's realistic military mecha, Dunbine's biological machines, or GaoGaiGar's hyper-realism. I honestly feel sad for people who swear off anime based on what they see in seasonals and common weeb recommendations because they're really missing out on some of the best television writing out there, and they'll never consider it because they'll think it's just squeaky little girls with grey alien eyes being preyed on by perverted high school boys.
It's so funny you mention that, because "squeaky little girls with grey alien eyes being preyed on by perverted high school boys" was basically my perception of anime for years, largely since I started paying attention to anime around 2016 or so. I legit thought it was practically nothing but moe high school shit or isekai nonsense, all with the same generic art style.

It wasn't until I overcame my reluctance to watch older series that I discovered the real gold of the medium. I still remember discovering Macross, and describing it in passing to my friends as "Top Gun Meets Battlestar Galactica", and they instantly wanted to watch the show based on the insanity of the premise.

And despite that show's age, they were all blown away by the quality of writing and the superb mechanical design of the Valkyries. And by the time we reached Do You Remember Love, they were utterly enraptured. And rightfully so, because that movie is fucking sublime.

The recent Tenchi discussion reminded me that a while ago, I came across a Tenchi fan forum called Useless Tenchi. It's been around since 2012, although I believe it's an offshoot of a BBS from an old Tenchi Muyo fansite called Ayeka.net that ran from 2003 to 2012. I guess technically its roots go all the way back to 2003. The forum isn't super busy, but it does still have a small userbase with a couple of relatively active boards. It warms my cold, black heart to see an old-fashioned single-topic fan forum clinging to life in this day and age, especially for a relatively forgotten show like Tenchi Muyo.

Never forget what social media and smartphones stole from us:

I'll definitely have to check that out. There aren't a lot of online communities still invested in Tenchi anymore, and it's fallen into relative obscurity these days, but the few people you'll find boast an unwavering devotion to the series, which is really nice to see.

I also find it hilarious that the original BBS was named after Ayeka. I rarely see her get stanned by anyone in the fanbase over Ryoko these days.

idk if the anime's bothered to establish it yet but the WN had some truly bizarre explainers on monster biology including the fact that conception and birth steal inordinate amounts of energy from monsters (esp. noncorporeal spirit monsters) such that the baby comes out stronger than both parents.
Don't worry, those babies that got thrown are guaranteed more powerful than whoever threw them and almost certainly landed on their feet.

Gods and Goddesses are so overused in this genre that it literally doesn't mean anything anymore. Even Aqua is more helpful than most """"Goddesses"""" and she's designed to be useless and a detriment to everyone. The majority of the time the "gods/goddesses" are some kind of alien that crashes in japan as a place to lay low while whatever shit is going down passes over and usually takes the form of a human for some reason. I recall at least one of the star trek movies calling one of these creatures out on their bullshit. "what does god need with a starship?"

Would it really kill the animators to draw something different for once like Slivers? As an actual threat to known civilization for once beyond "hey d00dz lets go fuck around and find out with the ancient dragon minding their own business in the dark mountain! OHH NOES! MUH FRIENDSHIEP WILL SAVE THE HOME INVASION OF HELGHAN MOUNTAIN! *Several episodes worth of DBZ powerup noises and a random JPOP number later*"

Except Frieren seems to be genuine European-inspired fantasy, not doing it for some nipponese wagie to LARP and fuck an elf in another world. It's like Lodoss War, there's good Gods and dark Gods and there's no tryhard twist. That's why I think the angel might be Serie, because she's an immortal elf who primitive humans would have probably seen as Godlike, and that's how real heroic mythologies start, the game of telephone. The mystery is interesting and Frieren is detailed enough to make me hope answers might come one day.

My recollection of the original is that a) Ryu felt a bit older and b) Edenhall felt darker and more mysterious, so the whole affair had a vaguely supernatural atmosphere, like it was a pocket fae realm that appeared to those who needed it. But it's been something like 15 years since I saw it, so maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. I might have the old fansub knocking around on a backup drive somewhere.

I read all of Kaiju no.8 last night in anticipation for the anime. Lots of Kaiju guts. As a Pacific Rim fan, I am pleased like you wouldn't believe. Characters feel strong too. I'm hoping the anime doesn't fuck it up.
