Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.

I will have to rescind my comment on archive.org, it looks like someone added the earlier patches after the fact:

I'm not fond of romhacking.net so I will steer clear of them, if I can.
Good to see someone on archive.org doing the sneedful and actually archiving everything.
I'm not familiar with the SNES community, are they all retarded trannies like this? First byuu, then this.

The basic sum-up is that the ongoing event for the mobile game 'Blue Archive' was badly translated into Japanese, due of a different approach which involved the use of a machine translator (likely GPT). After the Japanese folks were vocal about the issue, a patch came out alongside with an apology letter from the parent Korean company and a compensation fix.

For the people here unaware, Blue Archive is a simplified RTS mobile game where the player takes up the role of a teacher (Sensei) and problem-solving mentor in a strange nonsensical world where students (with halos above their head, sometimes with other obvious demon or angel traits) often resolve everyday conflicts with a shotgun/pistol/grenade/tank thanks to their bullet-sponge abilities. The game is technically made by Koreans but it's very catered to the Japanese while the JP server is given highest priority when it comes to new released content, to the point there is a gap of 6 months between Japan and the rest of the world (including S.Korea itself).

There are comparison shots that show the readability largely improved since the recent text patch, as lines that used to be crammed all together into a single sentence are now separated and given rhythm, the grammatical errors corrected ("watashi-tachi ga gomen" in first pic below should be an obvious example) and removing the over-abundance of kanji characters that looked unnatural for a native Japanese. For example, schedule is usually spoken in engrish therefore スケジュール "sukejuuru" unlike 計画表 "keikaku-hyou" (in third pic below) which was also a weird kanji combination.

Now, the other reason why I'm posting all of this is because we have English localizers trying to take advantage of this situation and gaslight people into thinking localizers are invaluable assets for the gaming world. That the average consumer doesn't care about accurate translations so it's fine to change context and censor content.

Thankfully the "adding context" feature of Twitter saves the day:

Covering the subject on BA also made me learn of the case of Scott Tijerina, a seemingly infamous English localizer who participated in several TL projects of Japanese games (worked with Geofront for Trails of Zero & Azure and as a lead editor in Blue Archive) and died two years ago from enhanced water poisoning apparently. I assume there might be other underlying reasons that led him to his death but the guy posting his slow demise on Twitter is kinda funny in a morbid way.

Someone should call Chubbyemu, so that at least the dude will give back the entertainment in death. It's probably similar to the coconut water episode, some botulism fucking up the body hard before the hospital realize the source.

Well I'm sure but fan translations are often pozzed even worse than official translations.
Maybe now but historically they weren't, were they?
In the past a translation being pozz'd meant it had forced memes, which were always dated by the time the translation came out, as well as the translator pulling a Working Designs and changing the dialogue to match his sense of humor. Said humor was always painfully autistic and relied of pop culture references, creating the nauseating sensation of holding a controller while reading a Family Guy script. Case in point, j2e has been raked over the coals for twenty fucking years because he thought his William Shatner joke would be right at home in Final Fantasy IV, and yes he's still seething over being a laughingstock:

There was also the Tales of Phantasia translation that butchered the script by shoving in as much swearing and crude humor as it could, but I don't have sceens of that one. If you're familiar with older anime subs that use every instance of kisame as a by-word for bastard and faggot, you get the gist on that one.

The long and short of it is that every generation of translators has been packed full of self-righteous, narcissistic fuckers who think they can write better than the funny Japanese people who made the damn game in the first place. The only difference is that in the 90's it was autistic nerds, and in the modern era it's autistic trannies bitching about capitalism and muh representation.

I can never remember which ToP translation was the good one. I have that one on my PSP go ready to go but man is it confusing.

Honesty some of these shitty fan translations look like they would be fun for a let's play.

I assume the bad one is the one where it randomly suggests that the witch girl "fucks like a tiger."
The problem is that the official (ok) one accidentally replaced every instance of "ragnarock" with "kangaroo" due to MS Word's shitty dictionary.
Also Gnome is impossible so it doesn't even matter. (Unless that was another translation fun extra)

Bit of a random question. But with all of the discourse of how gay localizers are and AI being more competent, has any sort of workable setup been created where you play a game and a secondary resource reads the text and gives a translation?

There's some mods for Unity using BepInEx and a specific machine translation which can be real time.
You can create the libraries, the source, near anything.
If that's better than a human translator who can fuck it up or an AI which can be still im barebones... there's your alternative.

For VNs there's Sugoi Translator which is supposed to be a pretty decent MTL.

This is what bothers me the most about these SJW types. They try to have their cake and eat it too by telling everyone in the west they should experience other cultures and in the same breath cry how other cultures are bad and re-write things to their liking.

I know SJWs are the masters of projection, but holy shit does it show massively in the translation/localizing scene.

They/them seem to really hate everything about Japanese culture and want it to be identical to american culture.

They are not being hypocrites, technically.

Their standard is actually "what gets me asspats and access to San Fran-esque crowds."

It's extra rage inducing when these faggots are cultural relativists purely to hate on their own culture and cannot even begin to process that in the absolute grand majority of the world their faggotry is not desired nor welcome.
