Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

It's hilarious that Tanya from Youjo Senki is physically incapable of being straightforward and making it clear that she's not a bloodthirsty demon aching to go back to the frontlines without a vacation.

The original is kinda sorta okay and has an interesting premise (though it ends up becoming obvious the first chapter was a pure spec manga and the author had no idea where the weird shit was meant to go, so it mostly treads water all the way up until the bonkers ending)
You just described why it's so great. Gantz is like popcorn entertainment in its purest form written by a guy who is really good at coming up with ideas and concepts but really clumsy when it comes to executing them in an actual story and he clearly does not give a single fuck. I don't know how many subplots this dude started up and then abandoned without finishing but it has to be more than 5, remember the vampires who get introduced just to do pretty much nothing for the rest of the story? Personally, I like it because it's very stream-of-consciousness and I don't think there's quite anything else like it out there. I think more people should forgo good writing in a technical sense to pursue pure entertainment because even if you think it's absolutely retarded, I've never heard anyone call it boring.

I originally wasn't going to post this but I'm hoping at least one other person remembers this amazing man.

Bruce Malte Carlson, better known by his online alias Grumpy Jii-san, was sadly found to have passed away in October of last year.

He was arguably one of the original otaku of America and helped with fansubbing and import efforts of anime from the 80s onwards. He would later go on to make a YouTube channel giving anime reviews while hiking across his home state of Arizona where he could talk about Princess Tutu one day and High School of the Dead the next.

He was an inspiration for my and many others' appreciation of anime back in the day and I was holding out hope he was still alive but it wasn't meant to be.View attachment 5915367
Pictured below is just a small piece of the collection he amassed over the years, his smaller belongings including the glasses he used to wear in his videos, and his obituary confirming his death.

If you aren't aware of who he is but would like to know more about his contributions to the American anime scene, the person who wrote the community post above has a rather comprehensive video on his content, his disappearance, who he was as a person, and how a manhunt to find what happened to him came to be.
Rest in peace Jii-san, your memory will live on.

Aw man, and Jii-san died mere months after the video was made. He must've never known about it, isolated from the rest of the world during his last days, it sounded like.

Sad news. Not unexpected, but it still sucks. I hope his family (grandkids, likely) is taking care of his collection. I'd hate to hear it got tossed.
Thankfully, Jii-san’s videos are still on YT. I checked the Invidious instance(s) and the videos are over 11 to 12 years old.

But the thing that gets me the most:

I hope he has all the rocking chairs in the world while hiking on the clouds in the pearly gates using anime puns while doing so.

Probably because Yuri!!! On Ice didn't make MAPPA money lol.
Sucks to suck. Though I'm still disappointed at how this probably means way less openly gay shows we get, even if this show's gayness still got censored.
Fuck off with your gaybait, industry. Either your homosexuals kiss each other or you give them cases of the not-gays.

Wasn't the show like a decade ago? Or did MAPPA count on reselling DVDs after the announcement to continue working on the project?
The movie waa announced a year after the show ended, so no idea how much got animated before being canned.

I hope every fujoshi cried bitter tears of blood over this.

Honestly, this isn't really surprising.

You see, while Fujoshi are certainly the loudest and one of the most obnoxious fan bases to exist, it's also nowhere near as big of a fanbase as they like you to believe.

It's mostly a niche fanbase that, unfortunately, has many supporters, or at the very least, many people who like to pretend to support them to be, in their eyes, "on the right side of history."

So, when the central premise of your show is about an insecure gay Japanese boy who wants to skate and make love to his gay Russian coach.

(which is made all the more funnier if you know anything about Russia's views on the Gays. https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/11/25/russia-expanded-gay-propaganda-ban-progresses-toward-law)

Then it really comes as no surprise that Yuri!!! On Ice was quickly forgotten about, no matter how much the rainbow group screams in your face about how great this show is and how many awards it won.

The fact is nobody cares about this show, regardless of how many awards it won.

So recent events did affect it?

Watched Spy x Family Code White last night. A absolute blast. Great movie. Is it Canon? No. It's anime original. But it should be canon. It was a great movie, with a great airship battle, great Yor fight, lots of romantic hijinks, and Anya being Anya. I give it a 8, solid.

Are any of Yu-gi-oh's seven or eight shows worth downloading and watching?
The first series is fine from the second season onward. GX starts rough, but if you're willing to binge it all it has satisfying development and ending (just keep in mind the MC gets with a space hermaphrodite). 5Ds is weird in that the first season can work as a really good standalone plot, then it waffles for a while until ending on a really strong note. Zexal starts in the shitter, until it decides it wants to be Battlestar Galactica for some reason. Arc V is my favorite, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's essentially the main character trying and failing to get people to stop taking children's card games so seriously for 300 episodes. It also has a terrible ending. Vrains is the most adult, and therefore the most boring series. It also ends on the first canonically gay yugioh character outing himself. SEVENS and Go Rush are deliberate attempts to be wacky kids shows, and it actually does a pretty good job.

Tl;dr: if you're a 90s kid I'd recommend the 2nd season of the OG. If you want a good, linear story watch the first season of 5D. If you want something non-offensive to put on in the back while you do something else, SEVENS is your pick.

I think it gets kinda old by the 20th time it happens, personally.
I think maybe? there's meant to be a joke in there about how 21st century japanese businessman etiquette is a bit too indirect for WW1 german staff officers but it barely comes through in the translations so at a certain point she just seems kinda retarded for not noticing they'll implement literally any idea she has if she just says it out loud.

So is the show set in Russia or it's because the main character is called Yuri?

Fujoshi are in general are vastly worse than Otakus, and usually worse by being just as degenerate yet trying to frame their perversions as pure.

What happened to the show? It was pretty popular, got a movie and disappeared.
