The thing about wearing a mask hits close to home, probably for a lot of us. Not even "they don't know about my esoteric racism and annunaki hyperborea truthism", but just thinking maybe it's okay to make a funny joke without twisting yourself up in how it might be offensive to marginalized groups. I just like to have a giggle at things and not constantly excoriate myself over it, which has even some of my better friends assuming I'm part racist. Not that they hold it against me, precisely, but that they can't comprehend another motivation for finding these things humorous.
It's eerie, even here in what's basically Portland I remember when lots of people I knew had similar senses of humor. Then 90% of people swallowed the popular opinion and convinced themselves it was because they matured and evolved their world views. Maybe I'll develop some kind of gay handkerchief code but for edgelords, to signal your allegiance. If you see someone with a kiwi bird bandana, you'll know it's catching on.
