One thing I notice (I think), is the lack of fanart and fanfiction (in both SFW and NSFW varieties) for the Horizon series, and their characters don't seem to be popular to cosplay as.

On FF.net, the first game has only 161 fics, and the second game only has 34 fics, which trails the top series in the Games category:

Horizon series has a lot more fics on AO3, about 4.2k, but it still trails the top 5 series in the Games category:

FF.net has fallen off hard in usage, and AO3 has become the go-to fanfic site. You can also tell by what series are the top categories on FF.net, compared to AO3.

Inuyasha has the 2nd most fics on FF.net (122k, only behind Naruto), but only has 15.8k fics on AO3.

And Apex Legends has more fanfics on AO3 than Horizon:

Bro, no one was even talking about them when they released. They dropped the first game right next to BOTW and they dropped the second game next to Elden Ring.

Makes you wonder which game is totally going to cuck Horizon 3.

What this information is telling me is that horizon does not appeal to rotten fujoshis, who gravitate to the old stalwarts like Hetalia.
If you want to prove how little real impact the horizon series has had, you could instead search for recently updated "community" boards where the usual suspects never fall behind the frontapage (non gacha real game categories that is: pokemon, palworld, souls series, fallout, the elder scrolls general, etc). I do agree it's not straightforward to get accurate gauge of something anymore thanks to paid-sponsorship news sites and paid-plants active on older forums.

I liked Horizon, both of them, the first more, and the DLCs, the first more, the second got a little too gay.
But then again as an old person with slow reflexes I like the story games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Horizon. And I haven't seen much else out there recently.

If we were to use community created works based off of game characters to determine the popularity of their respective games, then by that metric Overwatch would be the most popular game ever created based off the amount of Rule 34. All that popularity among community created works shows is that people like either the character's design, personality, or both and nothing specifically about the game itself.

I gave her a good look and tried to think of an analogy, and I realized that every single shop and restaurant I’ve been to over the past few months has had at least one woman that’s more attractive, or at least more interesting looking than Aloy. She’s not just ugly, she’s boring, and she doesn’t even look like a pleasant person. She looks like she’s been coddled all her life and never had any real problems. Her parents are happily married, her dad owns real estate, and she visits her family’s beach house in the Bahamas every year. She is not an interesting-looking person who should star in a big sprawling adventure.

The Lego of her strips away details and gives her a smile, so it’s much more appealing.
