Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I try my best to not fedpost or get MATI but when a platform like youtube does everything in it's power to annoy users and inject ads that clearly no one wants but doesn't spend a single fucking portion of that effort into curbing the rampant animal abuse, csam, and all sorts of nasty shit on their platform, it makes it really hard not to and if another Nasim Najafi incident occurred I wouldn't shed a single damn tear

i hope they do it and are successful. even with adblockers i spend far too much time on that fucking site and injecting ads would push me away. it's the last thing keeping me in the google ecosystem too so will be fun to be fully removed.

after all, it's just videos. i'll either find them elsewhere or i'll do something more productive.

One might well ask: how?
People have found ways for Twitch. The one I'm using from that repository replaces ad segments with a lower quality version of the stream during the ad then switches back to normal quality once the ad finishes. Maybe not the most preferable form of adblock but much better than watching 6 minutes of globohomo ads

I wouldnt be surprised if people can find ways to out Jew youtube

One might well ask: how?
It could be as simple as detecting how youtube's servers injects the ads and...doing something about the ads. Or something. I don't know, the server side stuff is bizarre, but I'm sure there's work arounds. There's always a work around.

Personally, I want to see how gay youtube has to get before people do something about it. Because, while most people think normies are a bunch of complacent nigger cattle, I think its obvious that normies will react negatively as soon as things become too inconvenient.

I wouldn't care as much if YouTube wasn't such a monopoly. If YouTubers could just move over to another service that wasn't dogshit Google would think twice about doing something like this. Same reason Pajeetsoft can get away with anal raping you with Windows Recall.
Yeah as long as yt-dlp still works dun give a fuck
If they're being injected directly into the video stream I would assume they will be in yt-dlp downloaded videos as well.

There's no way to know what's going on server side, the only way to detect injected ads is to analyze the video itself. But how does a video analyzer differentiate between an injected ad and the content of the original video?

Even if it were possible to identify the start and stop points of an ad the way SponserBlock does, all YouTube has to do is add some randomness to the insertion point, or use ads of different lengths. If each video is given random ads of different lengths inserted at random points a SponserBlock type service won't work.

I dont think AI is going to make terminators etc.

I do think massive scale automation is what its really all about, and shit like this is going to increase as we move forward.

Makes sense really, tv shows and movies are a constant back and forth trying to get the DRM and other shit out of them. Its really not a surprise that youtube is trying to do that as well.

Oh, maybe its more bleak than I thought. Maybe we'll have to resort to downloading our youtube videos to avoid their ads, or maybe that won't work either. Whatever the result is, I hope its annoying enough for everyone so youtube can be bullied back into compliance.

From the sound of it the ads are literally in the video itself, so they will be in downloaded videos as well. I can't think of a way for this to be countered besides manually removing them by hand and that's not practical.
User protest is the only way I see this being avoided, and given what a nigger Alphabet is and the fact that we're living in clown world I'm not optimistic about that working out either.
I hope I'm wrong in either case.

(Edit to avoid doublepost.)
There's something I don't understand.

I know storage is cheap as dirt, so AFAIK the only barrier to any YouTube competitor is cost of bandwidth.
But if that's the case then how do these pirate streaming sites afford to operate? Is it all the dickpill ads? Do dickpill ads really pay out that well lmao?

Would you Dear Kiwi prefer YouTube with injected ads or a no-video-ads dickpill competitor?

The Chinese will use this as an excellent opportunity to create a new, better streaming site. Essentially every US tech company is going down the shitter - Microsoft with it's spyware OS and Recall, Apple with... being Apple and so on and on. YT is unusable without adblockers but absolutely not worth paying for. They overvalued themselves immensely and so has the entire US tech sector. This is just the beginning of the end for US website dominance. It'll all start falling apart at the seams.

I noticed this the other day. And they're not gentle with it either. No way to skip an ad if you are shown one. It doesn't say it's an ad because it's literally linking the video you want to watch with the video of the ad. So if you really don't know what you're watching you may end up watching 10 seconds of the ad before you even know it's not the video you want to watch.

Worst thing still is that these ads may be several minutes long. Refreshing doesn't work. Going to a different video then back sometimes works. Closing the tab completely and refreshing cookies sometimes works. Using Piped and Invidious always works.

As Youtube tries it's hardest to stop people from avoiding ads on their dead gay platform, they are ruining the actual usability of the site at large. And because I'm not normie cattle who has been conditioned to accepting a barrage of ads, I'm absolutely not cut out for the brave new world of obnoxious bullshit and lack of user autonomy. I'm even more dedicated to avoiding seeing any fucking ad on the Internet

I'm not the only one to feel this way right? I get viscerally angry if some ad interrupts what I'm doing no matter how short it is. It takes the user out of control, the ad did not get PERMISSION from me to start playing its bullshit. I do not CARE what it has to say, it did not EARN its right to take my attention from whatever it was I was already doing. If I could physically headbutt youtube ads for constant social faux pas I would.

Fuck ads, fuck Google, fuck pajeets and fuck anyone who sees no problem with ads. They're the sort of inoffensive, reddit dwelling, carpet pissing, fence sitting retards who cry about something while lying down in defeat about it. Absolutely ignorant spastics. They deserve not being able to scroll through videos, they deserve Youtube using way too much memory because jeet code, they deserve ads shoving nigger ass into their face, they deserve this whole horrid system.
TLDR: 🎩🎩🎩

I had a thought, what if this is not even an attack on adblock, but rather an attempt to gouge even MORE out of the 90% of cattle that do not currently block ads? What if adblock users are just a casualty?
If people are already watching the slop, imagine how much Google could upcharge advertisers with 'they literally CANNOT skip these ads, and we can algorithmically place them at points of highest engagement' ?

Yewtube and other Invidious instances are being targeted by Youtube again, this time they're disabling the videos and writing that this is for "the good of the community"
Looks like that "this helps protect our community" BS is YT blocking access to vids by requiring login. That BS message then gets echoed on Invidious instances.

(it also looks like the KF Invidious instance is out)

And because I'm not normie cattle who has been conditioned to accepting a barrage of ads, I'm absolutely not cut out for the brave new world of obnoxious bullshit and lack of user autonomy.
I think the "normie cattle" were "socially engineered" to accept advertising BS and lack of control through excess "smartphones" use. I've used internet since the early days and I never really liked mobile phones or "social media", so ads shoved at me isn't pleasant.

I get viscerally angry if some ad interrupts what I'm doing no matter how short it is.
Nowadays soy hipsters call that crap "enhancing the user experience" or some "gaslighting" BS like that.

Can you imagine watching some ambience video to relax, but every so often it's loudly interrupted by advertising? Like ocean sounds interrupted by "HEY YOU BUY PRODUCT"?

Bilibili is China's youtube and it sucks a bit less, but it recently started injecting random videos in the search results so it's going down the shitter too.

It is an attack on adblock. Google wouldn't have a logistical reason for doing this otherwise.

I don't have AdBlock on my Xbox for youtube (didn't find a way to install one) and it's really a nightmare. They have 30 to 40 seconds of ad before every video and ads during the video. Even for people who are demonetized sometimes. I just stopped to watch youtube on the TV via Xbox because it's not worth it. And if they manage to kill brave's protection I will reduce my youtube viewing a lot.
I find youtube is only bearable with an adblocker. I don't have any desire to give them money for the content they provide.

If they don't want me to use an adblocker, too bad. They went from one sensible ad on a video to 3, then they stuck them in the fucking middle of the video, (Midroll) regardless of how the video was made, then they just started injecting them in music playlists however they liked.

Fuck google. They can literally burn money, and instead they're doing this.
I found ads at start and then the text-only banner ads during videos completely fine. I use videos a lot for white noise when I sleep, so the "post roll" ads started and I had to use an ad-blocker. Nothing like drifting off and then getting a loud as fuck car ad.
Midroll ads are fucking awful and fuck Youtube for showing them and fuck any content creator who doesn't turn them off.

I haven't gone that far yet on my phone, but they really need to start matching ads to videos. And I know them niggas can do it because I've had ads that were unobtrusive or I thought were just the next video.

Internet advertising went from just banners on websites to this extremely intrusive clown crap in Current Year. With pop-up ads and adware along the way. I've despised it.
This shit makes me want to do the exact opposite of Consuming their Product. I refuse to buy Toyota because of the number of times their loud as shit post-roll ads have woken me up.

The ways mentioned there are comparable to the 'old' youtube method. Twitch (AFAIK, I don't watch too much now) doesn't do in-stream ad insertion of this type. And you can see that in the methods on that page.

Done right, this is not detectable. You get a video, it's composited with the ads. The otehr approach mentioned of detecting differences (length, video hashes) and crowdsourcing the results is the most promising to me, but that's a lot of effort. I'd point out that hashing the displayed video might not help since differences in the render pipeline might cause changes that will break the hash. Then you'd be forced to run a separate software decoded chain and now I can't hear you over the CPU fan.

Midroll ads are fucking awful and fuck Youtube for showing them and fuck any content creator who doesn't turn them off.
Louis Rossmann showed a while back that his entire catalog was retroactively changed to include midroll ads with the only way to change it to turn it off one by one for thousands of videos. At that point he just told people to watch him on Odysee. I just assume everything is Youtube at this point, fuck them.
