After a few years Chris's trolling did have a political slant. There are groups convincing themselves they're doing the right thing by bullying people for having the wrong opinions. Chris was targeted for hating fags, which later lead to trolls remorse and the reformed trolls starting to shield him and put thoughts in his head. A lot of the crazy shit comes from that era.

Things changing as politics became more and more central to everyone's lives(unwillingly) seems about as inevitable as the sun rising tomorrow. I don't see why people think we can all just retreat to the supposed nostalgic period of the 2000's where "things were reasonable". As if we didn't get here by those same times.

Politics were a central focus of the early 2000s but it was considered more reasonable. The West were going to wars people didn't want and it was easy for everyone to focus in on a single target of hate. People united around hating neo cons seems easier than countries divided.

I don't know if I'd say 4chan was more centre in the early 2010's so much as I don't think many people gave a shit about politics. At least that's how it seemed to me, though I've seen some people attempt to reframe old 4chan as a bastion of 'moderate liberal thought'. But then things changed, and as everything got more and more political 4chan had to change, too. At least that's how it was for me.

4chan was liberal in the sense that it was mostly teenagers who opposed the neo cons. It wasn't specifically political but youngsters of the era all had those similar politics. They were kids who hadn't been exposed to politics in any meaningful way and today would have been on board with most the leftist garbage.
