I have to disagree with you on that. There is so much data about the neurobiological changes in the brain related to addiction. And not only in the classic dopamine theory now. We have functional imaging studies showing us these changes. These changes to the brain neurochemistry should not be underestimated as they occur in brain regions that are outside our voluntary control. Psychological addiction can be a real struggle, as many others obsessive disorders can (obsessive disorders shares involvement in several neural circuits with addiction). It may not be compared to opioids, but cocaine can be addictive and there is published material on that.

Sure, it’s not a crazy thing to disagree on. There is room for discussion. People aren’t dependant on cocaine like they are alcohol/heroine though, there is a difference which is important. It’s addictive in the same way fast food is “addictive”, that also changes your brain and there is an abundance of published material on that too, which is to say there is no reason they couldn’t just stop if they wanted to. People get sympathy points they don’t deserve because all drugs are lumped in together, so disguishing it all is worthwhile. Especially in the context of Nick, who has a bunch of sweepers pretending he’s “sick” and “needs help” which while that’s true it’s not in the way they mean.
