Castlevania Thread - Vampires, Whips, and Horror's Greatest Hits Now In One Gaming Franchise

You're not missing much, SotN is overrated as hell. It's really good halfway through and has some iconic elements, but it's not the pinnacle of the series people make it out to be.
Disagreed. Pinnacle or not, you should play through SotN at least once. I start it up every now and then and to this day every playthrough feels like im playing it for the first time again

I’d argue that SotN actually holds up very well aside from having to equip and use consumables in your weapon slots. What would you say is the best one? I still need to a proper playthrough of Bloodstained. I have copy on GoG but never got around to it.
I've always been partial to Circle of the Moon, personally, it seems very underrated to me

I definitely think it's worth playing, just maybe not beating, the castle flip always looks stupid and is blatantly lazy padding.

Best Classicvania is Rondo that juuuuuuuuust edges out 4 because the soundtrack is FUCKING AWESOME and item crash is cool and the bosses are really fun.

3 is also really good and I much prefer it to 1 because of the choices in the alternate pathways and playable characters, still the hardest game I've ever finished.

The New Generation is ok, but playing as Eric trivialises the game compared to John - and I wish the WW1 setting played a bigger part.

Gameboy games are fine but Legends is weirdly crap when it could've been the ultimate GB Castlevania, but Belmont's revenge is fine enough time.

Bloodstained Curse of the Moon is also very good but a bit too easy, 'spose that makes it a good introductory game like 4.

If I can rank from best to worst Castlevania
4
SotN
DoS
1
CotM
AoS
Bloodlines
PoR
3
HoD
OoE
LoD
2
Others I haven't ranked because I have never played and I'm not counting on the spinoff series

I just wish we got that Battle of 1999 game that Aria and Dawn of Sorrow both hyped up so damn much.

They apparently were discussing plans of doing it finally, probably on consoles. But then Koji left the company and Konami abandoned this brand.

If they ever pull a Devil May Cry 5 and return to the OG timeline, no Lords of Shadow BS, having a 1999 game would be the perfect come back.

I honestly see it as a part 1 and part 2 sort of game in my opinion
Gameplay wise, the DS games are fucking gems, even with the anime artstyle that Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin had. Aria of Sorrow on the GBA is possibly the best game in the entire series right up there with SOTN.

I legit think that the great thing about Castlevania is that there really arent too many objectively bad games in this series. Simon's Quest gets a bad rep but its not so bad if you see it for the experimental ambitious (ambitious doesnt mean good tho) entry that it is. Dracula X, Judgement, the N64 games have their fans despite their flaws.
On a side note, I wonder if the Netflix series ever intended to get into Aria of Sorrow territory? Isn't it over now though?

Julius will probably be gay and Mina will just be a lesbian. You know that they wouldnt be able to resist molesting the integrity of another beloved entry.

I think the thing that pissed people off, outside of the horrendous text, is that it wasn't a standard platformer like the 1st game was, but rather a platformer that also added RPG elements. Kinda like how people weren't too keen on Zelda 2 because it was nothing like Zelda 1

Simon's Quest isn't even that difficult of a game... you can spend the beginning part farming for hearts trying to increase your level until you're just beating the shit out of everything with one hit with a huge lifebar. The problem is you need to balance your time out so you can get the best ending, not to mention having a map handy so you don't get lost going back and forth.

Just play the Redacted hack, it's more of an authentic experience than the original,

The problem is, when it came out it would have been practically impossible without a subscription to Nintendo power or having a friend tell you what to do. The shitty translation and the obtuse shit don't matter so much in todays world of the internet being everywhere but when the game came out those things were a big fucking deal.

It gets to the point even the endings are absolutely confusing (and its surprisingly not necessarly a translation issue).

The Bad one - No simon at gravestone but the game doesnt mention his passing
The Neutral one - Simon at gravestone but the game mentions he succumbed to his injuries
The Good one - Simon at the gravestone and the game doesnt mention his passing but there is what I think was meant to be a sequel hook with Dracula's hand coming out of the grave

My theory is that this aspect of the game was probably a bit rushed and wasnt revised well. There is also the fact that I believe they didnt picture Castlevania 3 being a prequel so they were probably banking on Dracula returning one more time to confront Simon, some how. Im really glad they decided to "retire" Simon after this and just move on to other Belmonts before and after his time, it really felt like his job was done and done exceptionally well with him killing Dracula twice so a third time would just be repetitive. It stood the series out from something like Zelda where it was a constant retrend of good vs evil with Link and Ganon almost always clashing at the end.

What is Castlevania? I'd say it's a magnificent pile of videogames and music, amongst other things. It's tragic that we'll never see another game again thanks to Konami. I'm also astounded that Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night don't have Steam releases wtf, why? However the GBA games do and it's even more confusing when there's a actual mobile port of Symphony of the Night as well. I miss Castlevania, there's nothing else like it, but i've got piracy to thank for reliving former memories

Soshiro Hokkai deserved better, too. The Harmony of Dissonance soundtrack absolutely fucks and I will not hear otherwise.
There's this channel called "The Noble Demon" who puts out absolutely cracked remixes of Castlevania shit alongside tracks from a bunch of other series like Kirby and The Legend of Zelda. She did a remix of Successor of Fate and it sounds incredible in my opinion.
