Things have changed a lot now, but iirc, when Isom #1 came out, everyone was positive about it, even EVS and Comicsgate. Everyone was congratulating July on becoming one of the most succesful indie fundraisers on his first attempt and doing it all professionally with his site, storage, and fullfilment centres all set up, unlike EVS and a lot of CG people who had to figure it out on the fly (bagging and boarding books themselves, mailing them out one by one, etc) and delayed a ton due to it.

Juju was the only "big name", if you can call him that, who came out claiming it was terrible, and this got him attention because there is a giant faction of CG a-logs. At this time, if he wanted a new Maddox, a guy who tries to be a normie and wouldn't really defend himself so he wouldn't lose his professional image, whom Juju could bully and bait into a lawsuit and getting some more fame, July was the perfect choice. Everyone else similar in the scene was either poor and not relevant, like Narwhal, or rich but very willing to engage in drama and bully other people around, like EVS or Jon Malin. Juju could also flex his writing credentials by going after July, who had no credentials (doesn't mean he's a bad writer, he just couldn't claim to have experience if he was attacked on that point).

That's the kind of foil you need for a show like TBPITU to work. I never followed any of that sort of drama, because it is gay, but one notable similarity to Gamergate seems to be the move to make products that appeal to the audience the wider industry is no longer serving. Which is a fair response, it totally failed when it came to people like Sargon making Necromancer and other spastics who realised it was beyond their capacity to make any sort of worthwhile video game. Comics are far easier to create.
