5.56 has very little recoil so you can just hose down your target, especially in close quarters, hitting arms, legs, important arteries, the neck, ect.

I feel that the meme potential for the variety of shotgun shells available isn't getting enough attention. I mean they come in all sorts of loads.

Apparently a very niche forum called https://amarna-forum.net/ was able to collate a large archive of over 9000 threads from Salo totaling 4.5GB for anyone to pick up. The archive is being hosted on another very particular forum that dissident right writers make reference to. thephora.net has been around since 2010 with some very interesting stuff there if you snoop around. And as a bonus, a lot of them have conversion cylinders that you can also have shipped to your door that let you run proper cartridges out of them. The barrels typically aren't rated for full power loads so you have to go for cowboy loads (pls no bulli idk how else to say it) but it's a super easy way to get a very usable firearm shipped to your door no questions asked

If you're legitimately in 'price is no object' mode and want to defeat plates I think the HCAR would be my recommendation. 30'06 is the only caliber you can reliably get AP rounds in, if you're willing to buy in bulk you can get them for as little as $1.50 a round, and the HCAR mags hold 30 rounds.

Yeah I was talking to my ex military friend at work and he recommended the HCAR specifically. There's also a AR platform chambered 308 if you want to go with that. 30 06 is way easier to find and less heavy then .50.
Something else you aren't considering with a barret 50 is the weight of the gun and the barrel length. Pick up broom and hold it like a rifle, then try maneuvering through your apartment while doing that. It's tricky to do it very efficiently especially through a door way. Now imagine the broom is 37 lbs. Suddenly it's even harder to do.

Another thing my buddy emphasized almost more than choice of gun was designing multiple layers of defense in your home. You're already thinking of an early warning system. Get a couple of dogs, or if you want to get fancy geese or peacocks. Birds can make surprisingly good watch animals. Reinforce a few upper storey windows into safe firing positions, that way you can shoot with some reliable cover to get behind as they approach. When they get inside, reinforce the banister of the staircase. You're now in a fortified position with high ground. Have the foyer set up so it offers little cover. If you don't think you can stop them once they're in your home, have a nearby strong point preferably on high ground to set up shop. They wanted to get in your house? Well now they can't go near any windows or leave without getting shot. Poison some of your food in the cupboard, so if they are trapped there they'll be sick or dying.

All of that is of course presuming a two storey house, but I'm sure you can think of ways to apply that to something smaller.
