It really depends on the manufacture, year ,model. A lot of is experience. For example, I work a lot on VWs since my family likes them (I hate them). I know what goes wrong on the model they drive because I deal with like 3 cars.General car repair in relation to older vehicles. Just something that can point out what the most important parts of the car are, what their function is, how to diagnose common issues related to those parts and how to fix the problems. I’d like a basic understanding so I can build on that with some hands on experience.
There’s probably a lot of books for that on Amazon or something but I’m not a mechanic. Maybe there’s a “tried and true” book i’m not privy to.
Best bet is to find an old instructor for the relvant manufacture and ask them. They'll know exactly what fails. That's not usually something listed on books sadly.
