I'm afraid this isn't that exciting, or at least not that kind of excitement. The area and culture I am working in is the preservation of Western Civilization, through a living role model. You'd be surprised how many active cultural communities exist in the world, across all cultures, even a Communist ones run and practiced through the full intent of Karl Marx. Course, in our community he would be a brief discussion in a series of historical topics during the Industrial age, and the age of science. We embrace both opioids, Paganism and Christianity, IOW we lean towards the Gnostics and explain the history of how Paganism affected Christianity, That in reality religion itself is spiritually evolving. At the same time we do not argue over which religious sect to follow, that is an individual's choice. As Americans, we honor the 1st Amendment, within the context of our culture, Religion is simply part of Western Civ. There's Philosophy, Education, Health, Shelter, Foods, Language, Communication,, Work with Purpose which include, all the Arts: Fine, Folk and Skilled. Along with a plethora of Activity Clubs, Celebrations and Festival. As a culture we are the role model for Self-Sufficiency. In fact, we developed it, so it is our goal to embrace Independence.

I think we should seriously consider banning drones in war and conflicts and even used as a tool to spy on citizens without a very difficult to get warrant, I know that will not stop Israel, but I think we need to make the effort to banish them for the sake of all humanity. I've seen the footage in Ukraine, these machines are clearly war crime weaponry.

Thank you, I was scrolling the thread looking for someone to bring up communications. While the goal here is for everyone to be as self sufficient as possible, it's important to remember you likely won't be able to do everything. Being able to contact others nearby for help, trade, and just to stay sane talking to someone else is an important thing to keep in mind as well.

So yeah, I'm down for a radio/communication thread.

please do not take cats off the streets. There is an effort to restore feral cats to city neighborhoods, to control the mouse population. If you want a cat, go to an animal shelter, Also, keep in mind stray cats are notorious for spreading toxoplasma, which they actually pick up from catching mice -fleas. If you do find a stray and wish to keep it, have it tested and keep them away from very young children. If you are going to have mouse cats keep them outside or in the barn all year. They will usually gather around a goat, sheep, cow or duck for warmth and protection.

It's a pity LoRa doesn't go that far otherwise something like this could be handy as a lower power comms unit, I was looking at it for a sort of 'off network' chat with some mates as a project but we all live too far apart for it to work rip.

Unfortunately, trying to fight wars in as chivalrous manner as possible is something only civilized Huwhite men do, and since they no longer control Western governments...

In ye olden medieval times, in order to avoid paying excessive tithes of crops, farmers would on occasion plant root crops (turnips, carrots, ect) in places away from the usual farmland. What I'm trying to say here is

GROW DOZENS OF ACRES OF POTATOES UNDER THE OPEN FIELDS BENEATH POWER LINES

REMOVE ALL THORNS AND THICKETS FROM THE WOODS BEHIND WALMART, AND REPLACE THEM WITH BERRY BUSHES

FILL LOCAL ABANDONED BUILDINGS WITH WALL HANGING VINE CROPS SUCH AS TOMATOES

THEY CAN NOT STOP YOU FROM BEING THE ULTIMATE GUERILLA GARDENER

I'll refrain from posting the many bomb making guides I have, but have a few informative pictures on potato procurement.

I should probably add that you can have a mountain of equipment, thousands of terabytes worth of infographics, an ocean of ammunition, and a thousand acres of land, but no matter how much you prepare for whatever vague apocalypse you think is only two weeks away, you will suffer if you do not have community.

Community allows for specialists to offer skills, security of numbers, but perhaps most importantly, posterity and happiness. We are tribal animals, and whether God made us that way, or we evolved to be that way through circumstance, the moral boost and advantages of having a bunch of like-minded niggas surrounding you are imperative to your wellbeing. You alone cannot be a doctor, a mechanic, a marksman, and an engineer. You cannot perform field aid on yourself when you are suffering from a sucking chest wound. Even historical figures which we consider the pinnacle of self sufficiency and rugged individualism (take someone such as Daniel Boone, a personal hero of mine and infamous woodsman) had community, family, friends, and often had a specialty which they used to trade goods and services with other specialists.

The very first step to self sufficiency is to recognize that you cannot do it alone.

Drone warfare is just an advancement in artillery technology. Nothing more.
It allows for cheap precision strikes with large and small munitions, and is usable in large quantities by non military groups. The majority of drones used in the ongoing war are for scouting enemy positions, and then calling in conventional artillery strikes. The videos you see of grenades being dropped on random ground pounders are demoralization propaganda because it shows the reality of war. It's no different than shooting a surrendering or sleeping soldier with a rifle, or dropping mortars on a trench without warning. If we could put cameras on conventional artillery rounds, you would see an equal level of carnage and savagery. The newfound introduction of drones did not make war brutal and terrible. War was always a miserable thing, and the only difference is now the poor bastards holding a trench line are on video as they bleed to death.

Power line right of ways are regularly mowed which done at the wrong time for potatoes will kill them, there's all sorts of herbicides used in that area to zap high weeds (which potatoes absorb). These lines also carry underground stuff too so they could be dug up.

If you have abandoned building access, the local miscreants do, too.

Measure PH of soil, take soil samples, test for presence of heavy metals and possible salinity. Potatoes soak up pollutant like sponges.
Cancertato, glow in dark they glow in thee dark and give you all necessary minerals with free radicals.

Keep away from the Irish if you don't want to eat molested potatoes.

The whole forum is a bit of a mess right now. Some advice is helpful, it's never a bad idea to learn how to do stuff yourself for fun and profit. Growing your own vegetables, cooking bread, DIY, and in general a bit like a right-wing version of Whole Earth Catalog, as well as just general procedures to be less reliant on modern society, like downloading instead of streaming, cooking instead of ordering out, and so forth.

I think "in case of total civilization collapse" discussion needs to be fenced in because it discredits the board and invites trouble.

A lot of places sure, but not everywhere. The power lines near me usually sit comfy with knee high grass that only gets cut when workers need access. I will admit the herbicide may be a problem, by you can test the soil for that in advance.

Also the type of people who pursue abandoned buildings are usually just interested in doing weed and breaking anything that is made of glass. As long as you're quick around harvest time, you should be able to snag most of them before the vagrants even notice they're there.
 
Do any kiwis have any experience with carpentry/masonry?

I want to add a second story to a room with a very high ceiling, kinda like so:

How would I go about this? I’m assuming I could drill some big ass nails into the walls and mount some think planks on those?
