Rick calmed down after Kamala Harris was quickly selected as the nominee without undue democratic infighting (pun intended). I think he's right in the sense that this was the Democrats' best chance at this point.

That may be the case, but it's more likely bookstores returning unsold copies (usually the cover torn off and marked "destroyed"). Publishers don't sell to individuals, they sell to resellers and bookstores and physical bookstores can only keep so many in stock.

By the bye this means that the "NYT bestseller's list" is a complete fabrication, because it's entirely manipulatable and bullshit.
