Is he cheating? Sure is. But he’s not Lia Thomas who cynically decided to pursue the coom and glory. It’s more that the longer you’re in the lie, the harder it is to back out. Khelif comes from a poor family. They thought he’s a girl, and raised him as such. He started winning prize money from sport as a kid, which helped support the family. It's by Jeffrey Eugenides, author of The Virgin Suicides. The novel starts out in the 1920s in the city of Bursa/Smyrna. Lefty and Desdemona are brother and sister, orphaned as a result of the Greco-Turk wars. They also have a secret incestuous relationship, coming from a background that was OK with cousin marriage and running with it. As the Turks surround the city and start burning out and murdering all the Greeks, their only hope is to escape on ships rescuing international citizens. Lefty manages to blag them French passports, and these passports don't acknowledge them as brother and sister - so they get married on the ship and settle in Detroit, meeting up with their cousin Lina. Desdemona gives birth to a baby boy, Milton, and Lina has a baby girl, Theodora, with her husband.
Milton grows up to marry his cousin Theodora, and they have a baby girl who they name Calliope. Callie discovers as a teenager she's attracted to women. After an accident, it's also discovered she's intersex and her parents plan a surgical intervention to correct her to female. Instead Callie runs away and begins to live as Cal, performing in a sideshow as Hermaphroditus.
Despite the grim nature it's actually a really great book. Cal eventually returns home as a man, and Desdemona reveals the background and remembers that people like Cal existed in her village where cousin marriage was common.
That condition was... 5α-Reductase 2 deficiency. So if this person had discovered "Middlesex" people, their first thought from this book may well be "it was cruel to try and force Cal to continue living as a girl".

No matter if he cheated due to pressure/enticement from family, poverty, status, or state, this would not have even been an issue if the IOC had just stuck with some fucken common sense! He would have just quietly stopped competing after puberty and been whatever would have been. But it's the new world and even though XY chromosomes mean you are a man and should not be physically competing against women no matter how you choose to identify, it's not that way in real life and it's a big temptation if you can game the system. If there had been no reason to belive that an XY male would be accepted into women's sports, this whole issue would be avoided, but it's an actual debate so he's still valid so far. I don't blame him because you do what you can for yourself and your family, but I'm angry that idiotic ideology has allowed this to happen because his life could be ruined depending on how this plays out, whether he deliberately cheated for 'good' reasons or not.

Everything I've read says that at least a lot of the time, they look like females with 'slightly abnormal genetalia'. In a conservative Muslim country, I can believe they didn't inspect closely and truly believed he was a girl. I'm at least willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But even though these males seem to be girls during childhood, they virilise at puberty. After that, there isn't much doubt there is at the very least something going on if your daughter grows a penis!

*And that's the thing - in 99.9% of cases we REALLY don't need to discuss the specifics, pull out medical books, and debate whether someone is a man or a woman. One glance is enough to tell you all you need to know.

Yeah it annoys me because I have PCOS, and know many women who also have it. They all LOOK LIKE WOMEN. Some are maybe 5-10 kg overweight. Some have slightly more peach fuzz on their cheeks so they shave their face (which is kinda normal these days, considering the makeup craze), some may have darker hair on their legs, or issues with their periods. But they are women, and they look like women, and they would NEVER be mistaken for a man. It's fucking insulting to imply a woman with PCOS is anywhere close to manyly. They simply are not.
Anyone notice how suddenly there are SO many troon athletes around? Where were they 20 years ago? Where they belonged, in male divisions. They got so fucking brave lately, it is really sickening.
