Euthanasia will be the way: "Oh granny," the Doctor will say, "we simply can't afford you anymore. How about you do the right thing and take this pill?" The poor, who are a burden for the ruling classes when unable to work, will be slaughtered like diseased cows. The destruction of the sanctity of life is purely for surplus reports and financial spreadsheets. It is not some 'eastern wisdom' esotericism superior to shallow western spiritual norms. Like troonery, it stems entirely from a materialist conception of the world. The problem is that the pension and benefits systems currently in place in many countries is kinda based on the population being at least steady.
Other problem is that these systems are also based on the assumption that the dependency rates remain steady, and that the population doesn't become less productive.
So now we got a shrinking population, which could be doable, but also ever increasing dependency ratio, and lowering productivity as a result. It's bad.
There need to be fundamental reforms in the way pensions and retirements work. One proposed way I've seen is to have pensions funded by stock options in some way.
We should rage against the dying light because some in the future may not be able to.
