Mega Rad Gun Thread

I store ammo in surplus ammo cans. They can be easily stashed. Also you can put them in the bottom of the safe and put long guns on them
this is what i do pretty much. checking the gaskets each year for cracking and drying out (some johnny cash on the speakers helps pass the time) and replacing it sometimes is needed every few years, and i throw in a pack of desiccant as well as vacuum pack bundles of 100 or 120 if its loose ammo using a food sealer thing. works real well and is handy for grab and go on a trip since the vacuum pack keeps things together and out of the elements on a hunt too.

edit: wanted to share https://www.classicfirearms.com/del-ton-orftmc16m-optics-ready-m-lok-16-30rd

while Del-Ton isn't exactly top shelf, they're a cut above some other guys and on the same tier imho as Spike's Tactical - serviceable and cost-effective. i've had hands on 10 of these rifles in their "echo" line and they're all pretty decent and just have some commercial parts here or there. i've noticed that the barrels sometimes vary on the manufacturer. but $450 is a decent price for what they're offering.

This is pretty much my routine as well. Also, I've found that using a good rubber protectant/preservative (303 Products makes pretty good stuff that's intended for automotive weatherstripping) helps the seals last longer.

I can't stand AR elitism.

Same. The new hotness changes every 12-24 months and the previous white hot AR makers get tossed aside.

I remember when a Spike's AR was THE hottest AR at about $1k.

Now..... Who the fuck has heard of them besides their meme lowers.

Heh. Sorry, can't hear you over the Hodge Defense I paid $5,000 to part together on the secondary market.

Ahaha Hodge defense is the ultimate Hyper beast AR these days. It use to be Noveske

There's a handful of brands like LMT, KAC, and JP that are worth a premium (and a few more like CMMG that make unique uppers) but everyone else that reddit loves like Aero Precision, BCM, Daniel Defense, Geissele, etc. are not worth the extra money over a PSA.

Every single AR maker has QC fuck ups these days. I'd argue that BCM (at least the upper) is worth it over a PSA.

DD makes excellent barrels and Geisselle has gold barrels and lots of little quality of life improvements. Both of them have ridiculously overpriced lowers though.

I’m currently consolidating down to just four calibers: 5.56, 9mm, 12 gauge, and .22lr.

It’s just too much to stockpile a billion different calibers. Those four above cover every realistic need I have.

Same here but add in .38/.357/.380 some .32, .308 and both Russian 7.62mm types.

It’s illegal to hunt with bottleneck cartridges in my state, unfortunately, and that would be my primary use-case for 308. So it’s just slugs and buckshot for me when it comes to deer blasting.

I forgot some states have asinine laws like that

Geissele definitely overcharges for a lot of their stuff, but if you can get an upper for $900 during sales, it's an awesome deal. Their barrels are accurate, have a nice profile and are typically gassed well. Despite the bendy memes, I've found the MK16 rail to be durable. The REBCG is definitely much too expensive on its own, but it's included with their uppers and is really nice. The receivers are just typical milspec receivers, but I like the LPK in their Super Duty rifles.

Yep Geisselle is ok on sale. Daniel Defense rarely goes on sale.

Holy shit I read the reddit thread and the XM7 is a bigger POS than it seems.

The rifle is fat, hard to control, beats the shot out of its optic and is a bitch and half to clean. Oh and has feeding issues.

LMAO at a red screen of death on a $8k optic

So the obvious choice would be something like a CZ SP-01 or P-01 since the grip is similar to the Hi-Power, which fits my hand really well. Then I'd get em cajunized, SAO trigger, optic cut. I know about the Shadow models but they seem a bit heavy. Might see if my local big gun store has a one I can try out

Ohh the CZ SP-01 is so nice it's insane. Feels good in hand, shoots great, almost no recoil.
However..... It's FAT. Weighs in at 40oz unloaded with a mag on and the mag carries 18/19 rounds. The Shadows are even heavier 😩

The 75b is lighter and a bit more classic looking. Honestly I want both.

Speaking of pistols..... I'll be getting a Springfield Garrison 9mm soon.... Stainless. 1911 goodness in 9mm.

Also, Springfield makes the SA-35, a very faithful clone of the Hi Power with a better magazine and a few little tweaks.

How's everybody feel about .350 legend?
It seems like it has some unused potential, both as a pretty kickass home defense setup or a subsonic cartridge.
I don't see why you couldn't run a faster twist rate and have what's basically a better 8.6, as it wouldn't require an AR-10 sized gun to shoot it.

I may try and load my own with some 400gr or so cast slugs if I'm able to find a barrel or a blank with a suitable twist. Maybe even a heavy 9mm barrel with a lil bit of reaming and machining would do the trick for not too much money.
It'd be my first venture into reloading, but nothing else has made it as compelling besides this. Not really worth saving a cent or two on 9 or 556 if it takes hours to do and 1K to get all the shit

Anyone else sleep with a rifle in their bed?
In, or under? In sounds a little excessive. Under sounds just right.

Obligatory:

I have (had, before I lost them in a tragic boating accident) a Ruger SP101, a Savage Mk2 in .22, a Mossberg 590 6+1, and I just built my first AR in 5.56 and definitely didn't buy a bump stock when Trump was first considering banning them like a retard.

What do I need next? Feels like I have all my bases covered. I'm considering a break-action side-by-side double barrel like the CZ Bob White G2 because it just looks fun, and I'll totally never, ever saw off the barrel, I promise.

Speaking of bans, once Harris wins in November expect some absolutely INSANE price gouging and panic buying... For YEARS

Call it doom posting or whatever but she'll probably be President until 2032 and that means 2-3 Supreme Court picks 🤮🤮🤮🤮 and I can EASILY seem them "correcting" some of those evil conservative justices rulings ASAP

As for an AWB .... All it takes is a simple Dem majority in the Senate now and a Dem house.... I'd say the chances of one passing on the next few years are higher than they've been in decades. Ex. Trump will probably assfuck the Republican Congressional races in 2026 (just like 2022) and if he's alive in 2028 he'll do the same there too AND 2032 (although I doubt he'll be alive then tbh or at least alive and cogent)

dedicated target pistol in .22LR? maybe something lever action or .308 semi-auto?

Depending on how things go, people might look back on the past few years of Supreme Court wins the same we've looked back on firearms/ammo prices during the "Trump slump" ever since 2020. At least firearms prices came back down. Ammo pricing never really recovered.

Ammo pricing never really recovered.
Ammo pricing has never recovered because there's been something driving it up ever since. Covid panic buying, then the summer of love, then billions of rounds to Ukraine eating into supply. If we could get four boring years consecutively, then it'd probably stabilize, but who knows when that'll next happen. Seems we've been damned to live in interesting times.

Pretty much this. The prices are steadily going down for target ammo though. At its worst 9mm was somewhere close to 50¢/round iirc, but now you can easily find it for under 20¢. Still nowhere near pre-Obama prices though.

I always buy my ammo online because it’s much cheaper that way. You pay a bit for shipping because it’s heavy and explosive, but if you buy a lot of rounds at a time then it’s easily offset. I’m still working my way through the 9mm I bought pre-covid. The store accidentally sent me 2000 rounds instead of the 1500 I ordered though so that might be why.

Websites like wikiarms and ammoseek are good resources for cheap target ammo because they comb the web and find the cheapest prices for you.

I started stocking up after listening in on the CDC telebriefing on February 25th 2020, in which they said in a roundabout way to expect school/work shutdowns and whatnot. I managed to have a good supply before the George Floyd crap. I think the worst I did since then was spending 70 cents a round for a case of 9mm Gold Dots at one point.

And yeah, I've always bought online, almost always by the case. I felt bad for my UPS dude in March 2020. One day he delivered 3k rounds of 5.56 and 2k of 9mm. God bless SGAmmo before they started price gouging.

I don't know how you guys do it, but when I use Ammoseek I do the free/CF shipping filter and go by that.
I've never found a better deal if I'm paying shipping as the total CPR has just always come out higher. Paying a lil more overall to buy from one of the NO TAX OUTSIDE -state- is sometimes the thing to do, but I always just mostly finish checkout with a fake email to compare CPRs.

You can also look at the color of the lil bar thing next to the listing and it'll tell you how dogshit the shipping is
A lot of these fuckers will list 20cpr or whatever for 5.56 to get their foot in the door, and then after shipping it'll come out to like 60CPR for a sub $500 order.

I got 223 reman from LAX maybe October for 30 or so CPR, but for some reason those faggots think they can get 40 or whatever they're charging now. Up until recently they were tryna jew you out of like 50cpr for fucking reman when the Israel shit kicked off

Have seen people modding those, but it's the same issue that modding an original Hi-Power has where it's a ton for custom work. Also I don't really like the fact that Springfield just gets them as 80% guns from Turkey so that they can technically say "made in America" when they do the final milling/finishing. I don't really care about keeping an original Browning Hi-Power original, and it's not like it's that hard to find with one with messed up finish. It's just that I might as well look at some modern options before modding the bajeezus out of a 40 year old gat when it's gonna end up costing about the same.

I've been looking for a 9mm carbine, and while I'm probably going to end up with some kind of CZ Scorpion variant, I found this and thought it was pretty cool.

Ruger PC Carbine

Has takedown capability on all models, easy ambi switchable controls, and adapters for multiple popular mag types.
I've got one in a Magpul stock, it's even lighter than the factory variant. Overall they're pretty fun to shoot. Better feel than a Sub2000. The factory trigger on these is better than a standard 10/22 trigger, feels closer to a BX trigger.
