Tactical Indie RPGs - The sucessors of X-COM, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and Heroes of Might and Magic.

SteamWorld Heist is sidescrolling version of XCOM style combat with free aiming. Lining up shots so that you can take enemy's hat with ricochet taking it out was fun.

There's just released sequel which adds open world action boat driving between missions.

edit.
SteamWorld Heist 2 was mentioned in OP.
I'm dumb.

God these two look awesome. Isn't Geneforge getting remade by the original devs, too? I know the original series has something like 5 or 6 games in it and, miraculously, I've heard the remakes are actually good, but those are only up to the first two games. Should I just wait until the entire series is remade and play it then or are the older games superior-enough to their modern counterparts to warrant playing anyways?
No. I think it would take a while before the whole remake series is released at a decent price. Maybe another 5 or 7 years. The remakes are good but I think for Geneforge; at least that the classic version, is already good enough already. Also much cheaper. Current Remakes are much more friendly to modern gamers UI and mechanics wise, I think, and has more content and one(?) new monster to summon.

What? Chained Echoes isn't a tactical RPG in the same vein as the other ones, it's more of a Final Fantasy 10 clone in 2D.
Fair. I just thought of the game while looking at this thread.

Other games I might recommend are Heroes of Steel and Cyber Knight: Flashpoint by the Trese Brothers. They also did Star Traders series of games also. So frequent updates and a very in-depth combat system with lots of ways to make your play characters busted.

Heroes of Steel reminds me of Avernum but with more combat and crappy artwork. Magical post apocalypse happened and you and your squad try to fix the wrecked world. Haven't played too much of it though.

Cyber Knight: Flashpoint has a lot going for it as the you play as a cyberpunk merc who has to balance out the deals you make with your team and your clients (both of whom can betray or be betrayed by the player). Also stealth and going loud are both viable unlike Phantom Doctrine.

you don't get any companions which is the only downside of the game but it's probably one of the best newer post apocalyptic turn based tactical RPG's you can sneak around play bunch of land mines and bear traps.
Blow yourself up with your own land mines step on your own bear traps get brutally dismembered by psychic rat bugs

repeatedly set yourself on fire with your own Molotov cocktails and chemical grenades throw your grenades way over target drop yourself in A room with fire.
Failed to jump over a pit fall down into the pit die horribly by being eaten by giant rat monsters.
Fight off psychic invasions from the 5th dimension.

Surprised no one has mentioned Wargroove yet, its a pretty good Advance Wars clone in a medieval/fantasy setting. If you have a low tolerance for cringe you might not enjoy it as the story and characters can be a bit "reddit" is how it would describe it. The gameplay is pretty decent so I was able to grit my teeth through the soy. There is a second one out I think but I've not played it yet.
I also quite liked Pathway. Its set during WW2 and you drive around the African/Middle Eastern desert fighting Nazis and occult creatures. Gives strong Indiana Jones vibes if you like that sort of thing. Its not amazing by any means but I enjoyed my time with it.
Neither of the above are particularly difficult so I'd recommend both for beginners.

Probably because it's made by Chucklefish, the turbofaggots responsible for ruining Starbound.
Does Wargroove even do something that hasn't been done by Battle for Westnoth or Fantasy General 2?

3 pages and no Wartales?!

(NB: I know nothing of this reviewer, he may be a total troon degenerate, IDK, I just got the first vid that was mostly gameplay footage)

Really fun little low-magic (no useable magic, just some ghostly animals to kill/capture and some potions/grenades) fantasy tactical combat game. You make your whole party, classes are pretty much defined by which weapon they use, then wander around doing either combat, or quests involving combat. There's a couple fairly shitty DLCs (one focusing on sea combat/pirates), and one minor one that just lets you set up a tavern as a base. A pure arena DLC as well as a fairly hefty free base update are coming this fall as well. It started off pretty bare bones, but they keep adding stuff to it and it is now really well developed - although somewhat repetitive after you make it through the first three lands/counties.

Really hoping the studio makes no changes and just makes a Wartales 2 that expands and improves everything, but this game is still absolutely solid already.

Stolen Realm

(Again, no idea on this reviewer, he sounds like Kermit the frog)

An even more rudimentary fantasy tactics game, although this one has full on magic. Make a party and go through the rogue-lite levels winning battles and getting buffs or loot. Then get to town and train and re-gear. And repeat ad nauseum. Basic bitch graphics, but that's not why we're here. It's a really good combat system from an RPG, just without the RP to go with it. Plus it's like 7 bucks on Steam.

I think my biggest complaints about Wartales are Rouste, animals not being very good units, and super psychic guard patrols at high wanted levels. Like, I'm on a fucking cliff, why did 5 groups of assholes spawn out of nowhere in this 30 square foot spit of land when I turn my camera around?

Don't forget the fact that you absolutely need a online build or else you'll be doing plenty of new runs because you didn't meta build.

So its a bit old and can be a bit rough on the RNG but I'm a huge fan of The Last Remnant. Made back when square-enix still had some square in them. I've sunk hundreds if not thousands of hours into that game.

Saw this trailer today, looking like Fire Emblem with kingdom hearts esque artstyle

I forgot to mention but there is also chroma squad that released a long while ago and can only be described as "strategy rpg power rangers".

It's brazilian and a bit janky and childish but i liked it. Used to be super easy but got a lot harder with updates so if you want max audience you need to actually strategize. Megazord battles were also braindead but they changed to be more about minigames.
