They had a handful of articles a year that were good but given how many they made per year, they got lost on the site. They didn't know why gaming magazines were popular back in the day and why there were so few articles in them. Many of those magazines had reviews, codes, and guides. Something Kotaku had a problem doing. Hell even the ads in those magazines were often things gamers cared about like other games, gaming peripherals, snacks. Even back than their reviews would often come off as being too political which gamers don't care about.
