Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said public submissions for a new design will be accepted starting Tuesday.

Ten of those designs will be selected.

After a public feedback period, the general assembly will decide whether to adopt a new flag or keep the current one.

Visit www.ilsos.gov or submit designs via mail addressed to Illinois Flag Commission, Howlett Building, Room 476, 501 S. Second St., Springfield, IL 62756.

Minnesota unveiled its new flag in December 2023, using a similar method to the one adopted by Illinois, a news release from Giannoulias' office Wednesday said. Both Michigan and Maine are also considering an official change in their state flags, the release said.

Line art on flags is shitty.

Flags should be simple enough that a child can draw a reasonably identifiable version of it with markers, and then beyond that, distinctive and iconic of the entity it represents.

It should be accessible to the common man to that extent.

Like I hate European tricolors, but I think there's a possible sweet spot between slapping the state seal on a flag like US states like to do, and then just three colored bars like Europe likes to do.

I have similar gripes about overly complicated national anthems. National anthems should be something a crowd of people can sing drunk at a sports game to taunt the faggots on the other side. You basically need to be an opera singer to properly sing the US national anthem.

That's smart for a moment I thought they were going to go the Internet poll route. Would have been kinda interesting though to see a flag designed/mass voted on by the morally upstanding citizens of the Internet.

Illinois huh?

This is one of the best designs in history. Communist flags, where Communism held, are good, too.

(Null once sperged about how Communist flags were overwhemlingly bad, but it's cos most of them were temporary banners of ad-hoc factions which would stop existing one way or another -- a group would get some weapons, take a piece of red fabric, and write their geographic origin on it, it's not like they could hire a marketing agency to design a logo and run an ad campaign on tiktok for brand recognition.)
