I'm a bong. But isn't an "assault rifle" just pretty much a made up term to describe rifles with selective fire? and weren't full autos banned in or around 1994? The term "assault rifle" always just confused me though, i didn't think it was actually used in the military.. i thought it was just a moniker given to rifles capable of full auto.

You're thinking of "assault weapon". As many said, "assault rifle" is a real and meaningful distinction; "assault weapon" is horseshit made up by legislators to mean whatever they want.
