Yeah I'm going to say I feel sympathy for the kid(I know I'll get downvoted, but I have compassion when it is warranted). Parents separated, mother a drug addict in and out felon. There probably was some bullying but I expect it was a mixture-school was miserable and there was no escape at home, and home life was miserable-but school didn't afford him the support or relationships to escape that either.
Thing is, he's screwed. The system is not going to go easy on a White male shooter, and the best his aunt can do is get a lawyer that can get him out of a death sentence.
The fact he surrendered rather than committed suicide tells me he was basically trying to get attention.
If I were the judge and knew everything and was completely insulated from public pressure and retaliation, I'd actually advocate for leniency here. Maybe twenty years hard labor or something. A fourteen year old (White) boy is redeemable.
