Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said public submissions for a new design will be accepted starting Tuesday.

Ten of those designs will be selected.

After a public feedback period, the general assembly will decide whether to adopt a new flag or keep the current one.

Visit www.ilsos.gov or submit designs via mail addressed to Illinois Flag Commission, Howlett Building, Room 476, 501 S. Second St., Springfield, IL 62756.

Minnesota unveiled its new flag in December 2023, using a similar method to the one adopted by Illinois, a news release from Giannoulias' office Wednesday said. Both Michigan and Maine are also considering an official change in their state flags, the release said.

You have to realize that the US is a union of states, and while the federal government has become progressively more powerful since the Civil War (especially WWI & II), the States are still, legally and for the most part socially, mostly-sovereign entities. That's why they're states, not territories or regions or what have you (though even our territories have some actually pretty decent flags but that's because they're ran as basically pseudo-states). A state deserves a banner appropriate to it's history and ideals. This would be like arguing that European states should surrender their flags once they join the EU. Fuck that noise, these people are still incredibly different and should take pride in what their ancestors achieved across several hundred years of blood, sweat, and tears.
I disagree with the idea that US states are analogous to EU member states. EU member states have significantly more autonomy than US states do (one major example being they can conduct their own foreign policy).

The idea that the EU is or should be a "United States of Europe" is a highly controversial one, one that's only popular among a small group of ideologues and technocrats, and concern about the EU evolving into one is one of the biggest causes of opposition to it. The EU is an economic bloc, not a political one. On that note, the fact Brexit happened also shows that it's possible for EU members to leave if they want to, something that isn't possible for a US state (hence the American Civil War).

As for US state flags, most are only about 100 years old or so. Typically they were adopted to celebrate the 50th or 100th anniversary of a state's incorporation or a similar commemoration. Only the really new states (like Alaska) had flags right from the start. They don't have the same deep history as, say, the French or the British flag.

Yes, state pride is a thing, but most Americans would identify with the US first and their state second, but in the EU it would be the opposite.

Fun fact!

The Illinois state flag actually changed after the Civil War.

You see those two banners held up by the eagle? Sovereignty, national unity?

Before the Civil War, the placement of those two elements was reversed. Sovereignty above national unity.

After the war, as a reflection of the new covenant embodied by the 13th-15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the state legislature of Illinois approved the new design, in which national unity is physically placed above sovereignty.

A competent journalist (hahahaha) would have at least added that bit of historical color in. I spit on these pathetic excuses for writers that they use for these things now.

Fuck vexillology autists and their gay ass arbitrary rules. How many people actually care that much about the designs of state flags outside of a vocal minority of Reddit nerds? Can't wait for every state to get a generic looking blue colored flag with a white star on it that doesn't represent the actual state at all but makes Redditors happy.

Having never seen it before, it looks like it was made with clipart.
It's cluttered, messy and each individual element is poorly made.
It almost has a "so bad it's good" quality about it.

You know what looks good on a flag?
Symmetry.
Make something simple and symmetrical, something that stays in your head after you see it once.
Fuck no
You've been brainwashed by armchair vexillologist redditors who're scared by aesthetics.

I've never been to Reddit.
I also don't know what vexillology is and I don't feel like looking it up right now.
I'm just a very visual person and I've just expressed my genuine opinion of what looks visually appealing to me.

Also, The flags you've posted are all symmetrical so you're agreeing with me without even realizing.

Seems like a good time to replace a unique flag with a boring one that conforms to "vexillogical guidelines" that some people says everyone should adhere to.
Are these the 'Not Just Bikes' people but for flags of all things?

Here's actually a design that needs to be changed: Louisiana.

This is a permanent stain and is frankly I personally don't like it so it needs to go, and needs to be replace by...RDT_20240905_0126035010828030190431856.jpg
The old flag during the Confederacy, now granted, lefties have made anything relating to that now a taboo, but my opinion on this is objectively correct.
