Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I remeber watching recently.. AOT.. the english caption says "Now or never mikasa".... In japanese it was "Mikasa, imada " ... and in spanish it was "Ahora mikasa"....
The retardation is still not massive on the spanish side of things like you say.
Right. The scene in the final season when Eren fights the Warhammer Titan. I remember that scene. At least they translated it to him saying "now or never" and not "Any day now, Mikasa!" I mean it could have been worse by localizer standards.

(Has memories of the even cringier shitshow Spiderwoke 2 in spanish was with all the "es", "les" and "elles" they put trying to make a strongly gendered language "neutral")
"A le doctore" instead of "A la doctora" omg. Thank u for reminding me about this. I forgot that Spiderman 2 even came out. That game was so forgetable. I forgot about how they inserted gender neutral langauge in the Spanish version. I also remember that they fucked up with The Puerto Rico flag with The Cuban flag.

Looks like they removed the secret kink from the Lollipop Chainsaw remaster to not be offensive towards fat women.

The developer kept assuring on X that the remaster will be 100% uncensored but just like the Stellar Blade devs they were fucking liars. I already know more censorship of this remaster will be revealed as we head towards the game's release. I will be sure to post them here in this thread.

Edit: The bottom pic is from Repop mode and not OG mode but I highly doubt that the secret kink will be in the OG mode because Repop mode only changes the gore to rainbows/sparkles.
Fuck these FAGGOTS.

They would throw you in prison for being a Western degenerate in like two seconds
I'd rather be imprisoned by chinks than libtards, fuck them infinitely.

Localizers are now shoving zoomer speak into Dragon Ball games.
Wait for the DEI stuff, you know character creation will have that Body Type 1/2 bullshit, and nigger skin will be the default color.

Anyways, more cringe localizers inserting stupid shit from Dragon Ball Sparking Zero:

This is cancer.
This normalization of slang in places it doesn’t belong is cancer. Hell, I’d argue that modern slang itself is cancer. They can’t even use real words anymore. It’s always the most uneducated niggers and the soyest redditors making up words because they want to make the word “dog” cuter, or because they failed out of middle school and couldn’t pronounce “beau” like a normal human.

Rate me clocks if covered before, but is anyone aware about the DQ3 remake and their censored art because they fucking hate Toriyama and suck DEI dick?

Priest: Cross changed because apparently they're still scared of Christian imagery outside of Japan in video games that aren't made by Christians. Change was also in prior games

Gadabout/Jester: Female has more bosom coverage.

Monster Master: New class from 10 and, oh hey, males are censored.

I think they made these changes after he died anyways.

This isn't new but I've been bothered by it for 20 years. Dragon Quest 7 has churches with crosses, nuns, and literal god appears in the game. The games before that including DQ3 they were very clearly going for a fantasy euro-like setting and that of course included churches. Ever since the Square / Enix merger someone seems to have insisted that including a church would offend Christians and must not be allowed ever, and in the attempt they end up making a demonic looking symbol that's just a bastardized cross which is genuinely offensive.

Because those who are in charge are very out of touch with the real world. Only hardcore right-wing Christians and Bible Thumpers really feel uncomfortable about Christian symbolism and landmarks being in a game, and their advocacy groups insist that's all Christians saying that....when really the Christians are now mostly more interested in pleasing every libtard on Earth.

meanwhile in the English dub Kiryu's voice becomes soy-soaked since he's being voiced by SoyYea and a bunch of other characters are also voiced by faggy influencers.

Wooden performances transcend language, you can always tell that someone's reading their lines rather than actually acting no matter if you speak the language or not.

The voice acting business is meant to be respected profession that has roots in theater, music and acting in general. In Japan, they are often multi-talented where not only do they voice the main male and female characters, but also being professionally trained singers, they also sing the anime or game's theme songs.

What's the absolute state of the English voice acting industry?

It's either the increasing trend of hiring talentless "influencer" VAs who's only previous portfolio is having an overrated YouTube channel where they give safe and lukewarm news updates on the game industry, stretching a 4 minute topic to 25 minutes (looking at you YongYea) or the original English VA establishment based in Austin, Texas, the same old fucking faces, the same old fucking names, the same old fucking nepotism, the same old fucking Twitter Trump Derangement Syndrome fan-antagonizing side hustle (you'd be forgiven if you thought TDS was their main job and anime/game voice acting their side hustle).

Why haven't you blocked maximilliandood's channel. It's like one of the essential things to do on youtube so his spam garbage doesn't clog up your search queries.

I've only watched a few of his videos but does that guy have anything remotely a controversial/critical opinion or is he the Fighting Game Community (tm) manifestation of "Consume product, get excited for new product"?

It's one of the tamer/weirder localizations that people got kinda endeared to it overtime. It's not the level of shit we've been dealing with from the last 10 years where entire swaths of texts get omitted or completely rewritten into unrelated shit in the US/Canada region english version of a game due to californians.

That's right. With some exceptions, bad localizations in the past could be explained by lack of time/money/manpower, trying to get past Nintendo's strict censors, translation tools weren't as advanced back then, or just simple lack of care or not taking their job seriously.

It is undeniable that modern shit Cali-cult localizations are maliciously woke in their intent. While I think localizations are actually worse than in the past, smart people on the Internet can now detect the enshitification of the original Japanese script by localizers almost immediately, where in the past, it would remain unknown and hidden for years, even decades.

There's more than what they listed. She is also responsible for some of the fujoshi bullshit regarding X and Zero.

One example is that when the shuttle fails to destroy the space colony and leads to Zero going crazy, in the botched localization X insists Zero is his "ONLY" friend, including capslock. The Japanese phrase she translated as "only" actually just means "best" in that context.

While a minor one, this is an example of character assassination and could cause confusion of game lore and canon within the English-speaking Mega Man (or any other game franchise) fandom.

For example, you'd have the Japanese Mega Man community saying "X is an empathetic and idealistic robot who wants to realize his goal of a peaceful co-existence between humans and robots and is surrounded by a close group of supportive friends who share his ideals" (and they would be correct because Japanese scriptwriter = original = canon) while you would have the English community saying "nah bro that's not true, X is an emo loner and the proof is that in Mega Man X5, it was confirmed that Zero is his only friend"

Another increasingly common example of character assassination is Japanese character = feminine and gentle personality -> "localized" character = girlboss who needs no man and can do everything herself. Many such cases.

If you dig into her socials she is a nutty Trump Derangement Syndrome case as you might guess.

Max's entire existence is hype-man. He will hype up whatever he is interested in to ridiculous levels. Even if a product is subpar, he will defend it.

I'll throw him in the trash with Justin Wong.

Even Daigo, the (former) king of fighting games in Japan, who you would reasonably expect to be a corporate shill, is less beast and more human in his streams, and not afraid to offer constructive criticism of Street Fighter and/or Capcom. Japan stay winning.

Most games do not even need voice acting, just cut it out completely and revert back to N64 dialog. Save budget & make the creative process easier since you don't need new voice for dialog tweaks.

I do like it in visual novels but wouldn't have anything other than Japanese there.

Worth to mention when Vanillaware re-released Grim Grimoire on the Switch & PS4 in 2022, they re-recorded all Japanese dialogue with new voice actors. The English dialogue, however, was copied straight from the PS2 release.

Is there any evidence this is edited because of Western wokescolds? Couldn't it be Chinese bullshit?
Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD remake is a simultaneous worldwide release with no separate regional version, so it's fair to assume the american localization branch may have influenced the design changes. The troll with the lips removed and thinner nose, that I did show a couple of pages ago, is a good instance fueling that theory.

"You don't understand Japanese anyway, how can you tell the difference between good Japanese voice acting and bad Japanese voice acting"
Some people are just that mentally stunted if they cannot tell bad acting from other countries. Tone and emotion are universal.
A very simple example is how people enjoy foreign songs even if they cannot understand a single word out of it. People even enjoy made-up speak like in Tonelico games or NieR's lyrics. You don't have to understand what is being said to know whether something sounds good or not. It just is, it's universal.

This kind of projection also implies these people are dumber than cats & dogs that can understand humans, not from the meaning of the words themselves but by the tone pitch.

The voice acting business is meant to be respected profession that has roots in theater, music and acting in general. In Japan, they are often multi-talented where not only do they voice the main male and female characters, but also being professionally trained singers, they also sing the anime or game's theme songs.
You also have Japanese voice actors good enough to adapt themselves in the character role they're playing as. See Sumire Uesaka in the videos below, she voices both the hostess bar manager Saeko Mukoda in Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza and the mad scientist Agnes Tachyon in Uma Musume Pretty Derby:

And according to the mobile game Uma Musume Pretty Derby itself, there are over 100 different female voice actors with the ability to sing, some of them having to stick with the character's specific tone. Which I consider to be an impressive feat imo, there is even amongst them a freelance VA (under the alias MAKIKO) who manages to do a real deep voice for the role of an opera singer. Overall, it's indeed a proof how tremendously huge the Japanese VA industry is.

It's not like bad Japanese voice acting doesn't exist though, or at least what is considered "bad" over there.
An example of bad voice acting would be Grandia III because it used actual actors instead of voice actors, whereas this is a collection sample of what they consider good voice acting (if you want to hear a serious scene, skip the Gintama stuff at the start in 2:30).

It is real fucking weird and annoying when the Japanese voice acting doesn't match the English dialog boxes and you don't even need to know much Japanese to notice it. You can't help to think to yourself "are the localizers trying to trick me or play a joke on me or something?"

Actually, that gets me wondering. So the remake is CERO B in Japan. I know A is pretty strict, but how strict is CERO B?

So it seems so far, Lollipop Chainsaw actually might have not been censored afterall. With Original 2012 version (bottom) and Original mode 2024 (top) being shown. Both having the fatphobic line. If I find anything else worth mentioning. I will post it.

It's funny yet infuriating seeing the English speaking world's push for gender neutrality in everything trying its hardest to work within and change gendered romance languages like Spanish and French. It always ends up sounding stilted and unnatural as fuck, yet they keep doing it in the hopes that it'll catch on.
