Silent Hill

I'd prefer these names just having a meaning anymore, like a seal of quality. But most of these franchises are shells of themselves and only share the name but not the soul. Shit like signalis is gay as fuck and everyone praises it for being a revival of the genre. The same problems I got with Survival Horror as a term is the same as most subgenre terms like "Soulslike". Soulslike being more egregious and exhausted despite being far younger as a term. Its just my autism though, no one else gives a shit I'm the one MATI when it comes to terms I've come to hate. When I think of SURVIVAL HORROR I think of horror games that are hard as fuck like SIREN, shit that throws curveballs at you, bits of Silent Hill on Hard riddle difficulty like SH3's Mozart puzzle mostly horror games that make you actually think. Even then, most of the time I see no survival aspect going on because almost every traditional game with enemies is technically survival to get to the next level or to not die. It is just more convenient to call it survival horror because its what RE defined before 4. Now if there were limited saves or something that shakes up the way you approach the game to where you HAVE to conserve resources like SH4 I think it'd make more sense but even most aspects like that are optional for the sake of the players.

To me one of the key elements of survival horror was the item management and limited resources including saves. This went a long way to contributing to the tension as in the early RE trilogy and silent hill games you were constantly second guessing yourself on whether or not you should expend ammo to clear an important hallway or take down a boss on a first run. This combined with the possibility of losing progress if you died really heighten the scare factor which was already high with the creepy camera angles and setting. Just compare something like RE2 remake where enemies do not drop ammo and RE4 where they do. This is the main dividing line.

I am not spergy enough to think that these franchises should should go back limited saves on the default difficulty in the modern era, but I greatly appreciated it in the RE2 remake on the hardcore difficulty and I think it should be added in for the hardest difficulties in future games. I really dont know why this hasnt happened as modern gamers accept and crave the difficulty of souls games.

Of course survival horror game now just pretty much means a horror game with combat now.

You mean Shakespeare? I don't remember anything about Mozart in SH3. Maybe you're mixing it up with the piano puzzle from SH1.

This is literally just the REVELATION prison visually, so FUCKING DULL AND SOULLESS. GOD. THEY ARE ALSO INJECTING THE OTHERWORLD SHIT FROM THE FILM IT SEEMS. INSTEAD OF THE UNIQUE PROGRESSIVE/SUBTLE SHIFT.

Looks like Blooper Team can't design narrow corridors.

Make sure to needlessly brighten things up and then blame it on modern graphics :3 (in reality its the environment artists too scared to obscure textures they worked so hard on so they decide to place lights everywhere to showcase the assets which is a design choice I never liked)
Well duh, you dont wanna trigger someone's claustrophobia in a fucking *horror* game, do you?
Here is a UE5 engine game paranormal tales to shatter the SH2 devs bs

Their own layers of fear demake in ue5 looks darker than the sh2 remake.

I think what pisses me off the most about some of these modern remakes is that to the general public they replace the original game, and some retard will say "yeah but you can just play the original" well yeah but why would some random 14 year old do that over the new one? It's a shame because the experience of the original is just gone.

every single thing I have seen about this game in particular fundamentally misses the point of silent hill 2 from the atmosphere down to the gameplay. I'm sure just as a video game it will be fine but as a remake of arguably the best horror game of the 2000s?

I was just talking to a guy who was telling me REM4KE supplanted the original in every way and I was like dude it was a fun game but it changed too much shit in the gameplay and atmospheric experience to even feel like the same thing. It comes across still like a version of RE4 though, This game looks almost unrecognizable as SH2 even though in every screenshot or trailer I know what location I'm looking at.

Bottom picture looks bacteria infested and i would not sleep on it.

Upper picture looks comfy and safe and Bloober needs to add sleeping metheads, hobos and tents in order to be scary.

This happened with the "HD Collection" as well, where any changes made to SH2 and SH3 were generally seen as "improvements" to the "mistakes" of the original to the normire crowd who don't know any better. It just pisses me off that the likes of Tom Hulett and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn think they know better, to the point that McGlynn outright mocked Donna Burke's performance on a live panel.

As for RE4 remake; it's a good game and remake, but it doesn't replace the original, the two games are different experiences and have their own pros and cons.

I’m begging for the day McGlynn is treated the same way as she treated the original vas. When AI slop is the norm and people make money off her voice, I hope she’s treated like shit.

Were they seen as improvements by anyone other than the people who made it? I've never heard anything but contempt for the HD Collection from players.

98% of players I've seen have a working gag reflex and completely rejected the HD Collection. I've seen a few people here and there who say the new voices are better than the original, and that they "didn't run into many bugs/crashes".
I think these are people who also did not play the originals, so when they heard all the audio clips in the wrong places, songs being pitched differently, songs playing in the wrong places, etc. They have nothing to compare it to, so those issues mostly went over their heads.

I started on Silent Hill 1. It’s been almost 20 years since my last play through. Even with the graphics and tank controls, it still manages to grab me.
I was at a friend's house and watched him play it up to the elementary school. I was so enthralled by the atmosphere that I bought it the very next day and have no regrets.

This remake isn't made for us. They want the younger audiences who can't figure out how to emulate old games and who probably wouldn't bother anyway because they think that anything made before they were born automatically sucks. They're the kind of people who gush about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie which gets you excited that they're interested in a classic until you realize they're talking about the remake instead of the original and that you have nothing to say to them.

Yeah. I’m not excited for SH2 remake. One change i hate was how they changed up Maria’s outfit. It really changes up the philosophy of that character IMO.
