Oh god I found a website where they talk about how Atlantis was entirely copied from Nadia. Then there's the Kimba/Leo and Lion King case....where they were able to somehow prove the animators were unaware of the original (reminds me of the case where Lady Miss Kier of Deelite fame sued Sega because she claimed they stole her likeness to create Ulala. They were able to prove that they didn't know her. Funny enough one of the original members of Deelite was Towa Tei, who left the group a few years in. Nowadays they basically say 'fuck him'...conspiracy theory time he helped work on space channel five.) but honestly?......I miss 2D animation. I am so tired of the 3D animation and all the ugly character models and the sameness of it all.
they really obviously ripped off the DeeLites, but "it's like, gogo, but space and stuff" isn't exactly a thing you can patent

Also the only good (least awful) live action adaptations they've done are both Maleficent films (Angelina Jolie was fantastic and at the very least they tried to do so something different with the tale) and the Jungle Book. Everything else they have done is and continues to be half assed.
The only half decent 2d animation work these days is stuff like Hazbin Hotel, which is a pretty good musical if you can get past the homosexuals and Satan glorifying.

I'd hate to even suggest that Glorious Nippon has good 2D animation but Ghibli and Mokoto Shinkai......maybe even that Vox Machina shit. Hell even Bruce Timm's stuff.

Frozen would have been so much better in 2D. That one sketch in blue pencil where they drew the snow queen in a mink cloak and a Russian style hat was so good its sacrilege what they ended up doing. Also fucking Tangled....those production sketches during the credits.....we were robbed.

There's a fully 2D animated Looney Tunes movie coming to theaters sometime next year called The Day the Earth Blew Up. People really liked it when they showed it at Annecy in June.

This remained me something I have wondered for awhile.

Why are the current day Disney men so uggo? The girls can still be pretty and cute but the guys are just so not. Disney has allways had more funny looking men than women but they could do an attractive romantic male lead when needed. Nowdays every guy is fairly unattractive. At best we get only having few unfortunate features like a potato nose or disportioned body.

I like her as a character. Especially the whole thing with her hair. But the other characters are........blah.
The movie itself was beautiful but not particularly engaging and very short. I remember when I first saw it as a kid that my first thought when credits rolled was "that's it?!" and at that age I would watch any crap and at least be entertained.
Goddamn I really miss this stuff... Japan ain't free from it either, computer jank is creeping more and more in as well as motion capture and rotoscoping techniques. I don't want realistic movement, I want fluid movement! Why shackle yourself to physics and reality in a medium that is free from it? Keep in mind this isn't the same as making everything weightless like a lot of "cool animations" tend to go too hard on. But you can give weight and impact to things without needing it to behave in a realistic fashion.

Classic handsome men (chiseled chin, marked features, good posture, broad shoulders) is considered toxic masculinity. Disney also knows their core male audience (or what's left of it) is soyboys so they show soyboys in the films to make them think people like them are "valid". I also think it's a creativity and life experience problem, removing culture war faggotry from it, people write what they know, and lots of people just don't know a lot of things. The old writers of fiction participated in wars for fucks sake, they saw people having to go far and beyond and did it themselves. But when you have only consumed media and the most exciting thing you ever did was give the stink eye to somebody that cut you in line (while not saying anything mind you) what kind of character do you think they will gravitate to? Exactly.

Does current day Disney even have male love interests anymore?

Last I remember was Kristoff (Frozen is turning 10 btw) who was supposed to be more homely looking than handsome but manipulative hans, before that there were Flynn and Naveen who looked great.

The only recent love interests for the female heroines I remember are mariano in Encanto who had like 2 seconds of screentime, and that asian dyke with the very shitty sideshave hairstyle in raya... the king in wish, while not a romantic lead, looked ok ig?

Disney erasing Song of the South and James Baskett's contributions to acting as a profession will always be the one fucking thing that sticks in my craw about Disney. James was the first black man to ever win an Oscar, and only one of TWO individuals who've ever won an ETERNAL Oscar. Braer Rabbit itself is an actual AFRICAN story that was brought over. For a company that claims to be all about inclusion, they seem to be doing a lot of revisionist history around black Americans. James Baskett was an American Patriot, and a goddamn national treasure. I don't understand how anyone can be embarrassed over Song of the South. Period.
On the topic of Song of the South/Splash Mountain, Disney is apparently pressuring the Oriental Land Company (who owns the Tokyo Disney Resort) into removing Splash Mountain and all associated elements. This has been rumored for a while but the exact IP they're going with is currently unknown. I've heard Country Bears, Pocahontas, Chip & Dale, and Duffy the Disney Bear (Disney's version of Hello Kitty) are runner-ups for a retheme but they won't go with Tiana because PatF bombed in Japan.

It's sad really, the West is forcing their own beliefs and feelings onto the Japanese but then again what's new.

Except Osamu Tezuka was in talks with Disney to create a Disney animated Kimba movie back in the 80s before Tezuka died, plus the animators had to have been aware of Kimba, the younger ones anyway, because it aired on American TV dubbed and probably heavily censored. Some of the animators on Atlantis probably were aware of Nadia too. You don't get into the animation industry unless you're a fan.

I feel like it all stems down to the overall removal of strong males in their media. Their live action stuff is suffering from the same issues as the animation, with both Star Wars and Marvel losing their attractive/strong male leads and replacing them with either weak, soft males or women. Stuff like Indiana Jones and other independent IPs they own are also being targeted.

Yet another website didn't do the research, as weebs, anime fans and Disney fans had already done the research right when Altantis was first released.

Problem is other than the man himself Walt Disney, no one else at Disney really gave a fuck about Osamu Tezuka when he was alive and especially after his passing. Kimba had been censored including his name as he was originally named Simba before it got changed for U.S. release.

Deal with Altantis is other then some of the character designs being similar enough to get people's attention. Everything else was different enough to be closer to the original book than to each other.

Walt died in '65 and Tezuka's studio was only opened in '61 with Astro Boy only coming stateside in '63, it's possible, but the talks happened in the 80s.

Technically, Tezuka called his lion "Leo".

This is the website that I remember had the biggest nitpicks in regards to the Nadia/Atlantis thing. Apologies for the eye strain, no idea why its the way it is.

The history of how Treasure Planet, on the other hand, came to be is interesting. Apparently Beauty & The Beast as well as The Little Mermaid were conceptualized as far back as the 1930s. Treasure Island was conceptualized when The Little Mermaid began development in the late 1980s but circumstances forced them to keep it pushed back until the 2000's where it became Treasure Planet and flopped.

Lilo & Stitch is not based on anything as far as I know but I think Andrew Stanton (?) worked on that and then Bolt, and apparently the work on Bolt was so controversial its why he left Disney...or was fired idk.
