Hurricane Helene / Invest 97L

Related to Hurricane Helene's aftermath but not to Western North Carolina, there's a rumor going around that Duke Energy was paid $2 million by Clemson University to give power restoration priority to the stadium so they could have their scheduled game last night.
Shocked, just shocked. I hate Duke Energy with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. Fuck Clemson too, while we’re at it.

NC Kiwis up that way, be safe and know you have prayers and friends here. We can always have a private chat to grieve and, if need be, holler. ♥️

I'm not in Tennessee or North Carolina, I've got friends who are like brothers to me in South Carolina. Power in their areas been out for a hot minute, one of them was able to get a little signal yesterday and update us. He said something to the affect of "All other plans are out the window, the objective is to survive". Gas stations have mile long lines, and even then it's not guaranteed that they have any gasoline at this point. A lot of stores have got their generators up, water has flown off of shelves and I expect other supplies might dwindle in the coming weeks. What's been very jarring about this to me - aside from the obvious - was how in an instant they were cut off, went radio silent, and had no idea about the shit going down in North Carolina right now. I was updating one of them a little while ago, and every few messages the man seemed dumbfounded. Make no mistake, this will eventually be referred to as Appalachia's Katrina. I've been reminiscing on all the storms I've seen in my days, the worst I saw was in 2021 when the EF4 destroyed half of Kentucky. It's terrifying to realize that mankind can turn empty land into thriving communities and spectacles of engineering and construction - and in a few moments it can all be swept away by a force of nature one could never possibly combat. I hope for a speedy recovery for all involved. I hope that those missing are found, and I hope that as many as possible are safe and alive. I hope against hope that there isn't a round two on the horizon.

There is gonna be a second hurricane most likely but it looks like it won't quite affect Appalachia anywhere near the same way (and it'll likely landfall further west than Helene). Any wind or rain is gonna make things worse, though so I pray that it's not much.

Fatalities up to 75+, with over 1,000 missing in North Carolina alone, and another 78 missing in Tennessee (only 5 counted in this post).

I'm in an affected area. Didn't have mobile internet until less than 30 minutes ago.

No power since Friday morning. Water though. Fallen trees and powerlines all over the place, but my particular area was spared the worst. Still, stoplights are not working for about 5-10 miles or so. It's a miracle so few people are wrecking.

Got gas today after a 45 minute wait. Faggots filling up all their gas cans at once, of course. At least I was able to charge a bunch of devices in my car during the drive and wait.

The moment anything goes wrong, people stop following the law and even basic rules of civility. This reminds me too much of the pandemic.

God damn I want my fucking power, so I went looking to see what the motherfuckers were doing only to see pajeets literally joyriding down the fucking street in circles in the duke power truck thing. Right past the trees and fallen power lines over and over, what are you even here for? Please fall off that bridge into the lake.

Others were just sitting there. At the same place literally morning and night, and nothing had been done. They were just stating at the pole for 12 hours I guess

Worst of all, we called to see what was happening. Of course an Indian picks up and they tried to blame it on "sar we have been looking for technician"

FOR 3 DAYS? THERE'S NOT A SINGLE TECHNICIAN IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA?

Kiss my ass

Has Biden, Kamala, Trump or Vance said anything about the disaster? Has anyone?
I wonder about food shortages. Just thinking once the power gets cut on, stores will be emptied from people needing to restock after having to toss out their food. How bad will it be in the areas that are inaccessible by interstate?

I've been on here too long, I read this as great fuckiny manboobs.
This is absolutely the kind of levity this thread could use. Got an irl guffaw out of me, and Ive been personally effected by this. Not nearly as much as others, but some priceless family heirlooms I had in storage are most certainly destroyed, and lots of my close friends are either in dire straights or nonresponsive. I just moved away from the area recently.

The dudes get paid to be there whether they can work or not, so sometimes they literally have to sit there. If a large tree falls on the lines, they have to wait for a crane to remove it before they can start work. It's really fucking annoying but part of the process.

Why Georgia? The worst is in NC and Tennessee.
Presumably because he can't get to the parts of NC or Tennessee that are the hardest hit, all the interstates are down. He could possibly fly in, but right now it's best to let emergency services have access and not distract things with having a presidential candidate come in.
Not to get too deep into the politisperging here, but while, yes, he said he's visiting Georgia tomorrow, I don't recall him mentioning it was for the sake of assessing damages.
According to the news he's specifically going to Valdosta to tour the damage.
