i doubt anyone will be running doom on it anytime soon tho

...With only 12,600 logic gates, the Flex-RV prototype achieves a maximum clock speed of 60 kHz – that's 0.00006 GHz in PC gamer terms... Consuming less than 6 mW of power, this ultra-efficient chip is ideal for powering disposable medical devices and a new frontier of flexible, body-conforming gadgets, such as improved health wearables, soft robotics, and even brain-computer interfaces.

That tracks with what I remember seeing in a previous article about a bendable microprocessor... they have extremely low clock speeds (RPi Pico 1 is 133 MHz). But the power consumption is low and a wearable device with sensors probably doesn't need much processing power.

Are there any downdraft air coolers that draw air in from the side vent and then push it out the back? I don't have the tools or skills to make nice, clean holes in the front of my case for a regular air cooler, and the design wouldn't work anyways because of where the OEM internals sit. I know this is stupid but I'd appreciate if someone would answer my stupid question.

Hi! I use Computers for Niggers (Mac OS), in which my filthy black hands are kept far away from being able to monkey up any settings that could lead to technical problems that would cause me to chimp out. I have to say, I am very pleasantly surprised by my 2019 MacBook Pro. It's powerful enough to play Pal World in Boot Camp, and despite all the horror stories I've heard about the 9th gen i9 processor, it's been whisper quiet and very performant for the things I actually use it for. Now, would some say I am a retard for paying $500 for a laptop that is five years old? Yes. But the display is extremely nice (I don't need more than 60 Hz because let's face it, with a Radeon 5500M I'm not getting more than 60 FPS regardless), the aluminum body is nice, and the fact that it was the first model to switch back to the "scissor keyboard" instead of the "butterfly keyboard" is a huge benefit too. I'm extremely happy with my purchase! Now I can play Windows games while still being able to use Mac OS like the tard I truly am. Huzzah!

If you need to direct the heat somewhere other than up you should probably get a water cooler .

Never seen one with a dual fan configuration like you're proposing, but you get the same effect with a normal downdraft cooler and an exhaust fan at the rear or top of the case. If your motherboard has a CPU_AUX pin connect the rear fan to that so it's controlled by CPU temperature, otherwise just use a splitter cable.
The NH-C14 is a good example of a modern downdraft cooler (even though it's basically just a single tower on bent stilts)

If you want to draw air in through the top (perpendicular to the CPU I mean) and push it out the side you could easily DIY one if you get an old server heatsink (such as this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235576322408 ,) seal off the back with duct tape, then mount a fan on it somehow. I have done this but without the tape part. Make sure the heatsink you get matches the socket on your motherboard, of course. You will need a powerful fan, so water cool it instead if you care about noise.

If somehow anybody here hasn't heard about it, the Sibelco high-purity quartz mine in North Carolina has been shut down indefinitely due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene: https://www.yahoo.com/news/helene-shutters-spruce-pine-nc-004044203.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall

This ultrapure quartz is used for various different steps in the manufacture of every single semiconductor post-1990s. Which means that if this mine is closed for too long, the price of all computer components is going to spike regardless of manufacturer. So if you are looking to buy anything with a semiconductor chip, now would be a good time to do so before prices increase.

My PC case from 2007 had a side vent and plastic shroud internally to direct air right on top of the CPU.

shut down indefinitely
The article says it's a temporary closure?
Sibelco told The News & Observer Monday that the company has “temporarily halted operations at the Spruce Pine facilities” since Sept. 26.
Sometimes mines that are on the edge of profitability get permanently closed after a major disturbance as it's too costly to repair and restart operations. I doubt this is the case with this mine as the company is actively investing in expanding its production.
Last year, Sibelco announced it would invest $200 million into the site by 2025 to double production.
According to this article, their product is the purest of them all. It would seem they can charge whatever premium they want, since if you need their product, you're only going to get it from one place.

I don't think the mine will be offline for very long in spite of the devastation. Mining companies can't afford to leave their cash cows idle for too long.

Some SFF PCs have that kind of design. Like this Optiplex 9020 USFF

There's no external vent on the side though, the CPU fan just sucks in whatever cool air happens to come in through the front panel fan at the bottom right then exhausts it out the back.

That blower style was also a common stock fan configuration for GPUs.

Not sure if anyone makes these as a normal part you can put into a PC. Maybe you could steal one out of an old SFF PC?

How good is a Ryzen 6500 with an rx6500xt? I'm trying to build a budget gaming pc, but I'm not interested in running triple a slop at 4k.

Ryzen 6500 is alright, but the RX6500xt can go suck dicks for cock. 4GB VRAM isn't good enough even for 1080p anymore, and devs are only gonna fuck shit up even more as time goes on. I'd jump to a 6600/xt to get 8GB at least. I ran a GTX 1080 with 8GB until a year ago and it held up okay.

So would this be better by a lot? It's only like $100-$150 more I think

A little unrelated to what you say, but it is easy to convert server-grade GPUs into blower-style ones, since their heatsink fins are parallel with the direction of the PCIe slot itself. There are many 3D-printed adapters for blower fans floating around on Amazon, Ebay, etc. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/hs8AAOSwomhl1Bpw/s-l1600.webp

The mine needs a shit ton of energy to operate, and power grids supplying power to the Spruce Pine area are toast: https://poweroutage.us/area/state/north carolina
The absolute best-case scenario is that the quartz becomes a lot more expensive due to energy scarcity in the surrounding area. The worst-case scenario is that the mine shuts down for a long time. Believe what you want, but I am not taking any risks here.

The mine being shut down for a long time is the best case scenario. It gives China time to establish its own supply chain, so that when the yank mine is back online, there is competition to lower the prices and spur progress. A resource monopoly, especially one controlled by the USA, is a vile thing that inhibits progress.

if you're using an old case with drive bays at the front that obscure airflow, there really aren't a lot of off the shelf options that cater to side air vents because they've fallen out of fashion. the cases i had generally put the side intake closer to the bottom for gpu than the cpu, but i digress. there are some off-axis coolers but they're really targeted for low profile and lower power cpus, plus they don't really direct airflow in any direction. you might be able to find some old legacy coolers "meant for that" but i doubt they perform.

zalman cpu cooler.jpgCPU-Cooling-Noctua-NH-L9X65-Chromax-Black-Low-Profile-CPU-Cooler-6-3022975951.jpg

while a direct side intake would be ideal i dont think you're really losing much if you just use a regular tower cooler and put a fan intake on the side. there might be more turbulence but the turbulence is mixing cold air with hot air and still cooling stuff down. if you're trying to minimize dust by managing air pressure then you're kind of just screwed with old cases, there's a reason old case styles fell out of fashion and its not just the disk drives
