It was used as the ultimate scapegoat, but the actual important thing that gamergate achieved is that it got a lot of people "noticing" who in the past gave no shits. A lot of people honesly lived in the land of "why would they lie?" and when they saw that the all read from the same playbook, and spread the same bullshit, it started making them hiper aware that this just wasn't a videogane journo thing, it was jounalism in general and beyond that.Don't bother.
Fed straight up called me an Incel before.
They're one of those "It meant nothing" types because as @Hooked on phobics said "Because it didn't immediately stomp out Games Journalism, it's a failure"
Of course the media spinned like they do and at that point in time had enough trust to basically rewrite gamergate to "monster chuds" and won the messaging battle in normie space. But all of the redpilling it generated in exchange ended having enough value and staying power to still be buzzing today when media trust is in the shitter.
Had no Gamergate happened the most charitable thing you can say is that more standard or conservative frames of mind would have not been publicly hounded out of the industry (and maybe Tim Soret could have released his fucking gane) but they would have silently been purged anyway by the silent march through HR. And being less charitable it would be the exact same but with something else being the catalyst that got people paying attention and talking about it instead of five guys.
I rather have hyper aware spergs screaming woke at everything than radio silence and me wondering if I'm fucking insane for thinking that everything just looks shittier.
