From a purely objective view, I don’t think anybody could’ve predicted this outcome for Nick. I have to admit, It’s a little disturbing to see him go from a seemingly dorky harmless guy, to endangering his children and getting into hard drugs, particularly at his age.

I know a lot of former-fans have been giving him shit, saying he’s a narcissist, and awful human being, etc. Which is understandable, however 80% of what he says can be chalked up to him being an addict. Not an excuse, but the distinction is important. Again, the transformation of his family is disturbing. Nick had a lot going for him, and I find it hard to believe that all of this awful shit happened just because Nick is smug and a ‘bad guy’. Some people believe that his whole persona was a lie now, and that he was actually a horrible person underneath, but that doesn’t make sense. This type of corruption seems utterly abnormal, and it makes me fear the worst has happened to the Rekeitas. I hope one day we will find out what happened to make him lose it so hard.

I say this as someone who has a lot of sympathy for people actively battling addiction, even when they slip and have to start again. It's tough, but when it's got a hold of them it makes people into monsters.

This is why I think Nick's character defects aren't a result of the addiction, because despite being forced to undergo a period of sobriety by the state - allegedly the testing has ended and he immediately relapsed - he displayed no contrition, no admission that his drinking and drug usage negatively effected his life. He has, as far as I am aware, never apologized for what he put his kids and parents though - that's our fault, the pastors fault, Alisha Sweeps fault...

Even when you see addicts relapse immediately, before they do they usually at least express an understanding of what their addiction did to them and their family.

He had it when he played tee ball and knocked out a pitcher and when he was a cheerleader in college and routinely wowed the crowd with his performances and even when he “accidentally” fingered some all too willing female cheerleaders.

The words flowed forth like a river breaking a dam. Retard, dumbass, moron, faggot and so many other brilliantly constructed put-downs.

He took a drink of whiskey to calm his nerves. His hand was shaking - Provigil, which he brilliantly took for his heat allergy and definitely not because he thought it would prevent gout or whatever, often causes that.

I've known people in the throes of addiction who didn't act like selfish, self-centred cunts, but they're extraordinarily rare.

It really depends on what it is they are using. There are plenty of reasonably happy cheerful and outgoing high functioning alcoholics. The happy friendly drunk is a thing. Alcohol just tends to amplify what is already there. In the same way habitual Marijuana users tend to be a fairly mellow and inoffensive bunch, if they are limited to Marijuana. For the most part the only thing offensive about them is that stench of burning skunk that is weed.

I've never met a habitual cocaine user that wasn't a raging cunt or sociopath. Stimulants seem to bring out the absolute worst in anyone.

They are usually narcissistic control freaks who won’t touch drugs/booze because it puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to manipulation. Some PD types actually tend to be attracted to users or addicts because they are easier to gaslight and control). Vanity can also play a role because drug users and drunks are looked down upon traits and appearances are everything to them, so refraining from vices gives them a sense of superiority (and again another reason some love to be around addicts or less sober type people). They will even pretend to indulge in booze or drugs to encourage everyone around them to get uninhibited, or let their guard down, but themselves.

Given Nick’s particular brand of PD I was a bit surprised he went so off the rails with the drugs and booze, because he has that strong superiority and control freak aspect. He had seemed to really lean into that Christian patriarch of a large family schtick, but again, those types are usually the strict sadistic disciplinarian types. Nick seems to abhor discipline in all forms, not just for himself. (Or at least I hope, his kids have enough on their plate without Nick secretly being a sadistic disciplinarian.

I consider someone who dishes out discipline or punishment according to whims and mood, not an understood, reasonable set of rules and conduct, a sadistic disciplinarian. Sadistic disciplinarians always have personality disorders, but not everybody with a PD is a sadistic disciplinarian.

But it is true that he’s trash whether sober or not, the drugs and booze just amplify his worst impulses and he can’t fool anyone with his false facade. Getting labeled as an addict really gums up how he works.
