The point of the ruling is the SC is trying to prevent a cycle of retaliation between different administrations for the actions of others. It also means Trump can't go after Biden for his massive fuck ups like the Afghanistan pullout or the endless Ukraine "aid".

Two different issues. They are dropping the charges because the justice department is under the executive branch so you have in effect the president prosecuting himself, so the justice department does not prosecute the president as a matter of policy. The supreme Court has not touched on this, to my knowledge.

The supreme Court has ruled that the president has presumptive immunity on official actions. This means in effect if you want to prosecute a current or former president you must establish that the action was not part of his official duties and you may not use evidence from his official duties as evidence during trial. The issue with all of these cases is they took no effort, explicitly so, in establishing the evidence they were using was not related to his official duties, but the judge is conveniently ignoring all of that.

I believe that the statute of limitations for the crimes he was accused of is five years. That means that after 1/6/2026 those charges from that event are time barred.
