This can't possibly be the case even if the parent legally relinquishes the child, and the child is formally adopted through the usual legal means. Otherwise every fifteen year old runaway who gives their child up for adoption would owe child support to the family that adopts the kid. Unless I'm missing something here...?
It's very likely that Greta's parents didn't formally adopt the girl - they maybe just took her in or got primary custody, which would of course still mean that Greta had to support her financially. We've seen how well Greta handles legal forms of any kind, so it's not impossible that there was never any actual adoption and she never actually gave up custody of the kid but rather just slogged her off on the grandparents and went off to go do whatever.
Correct, legal adoption makes them your child and responsibility in every sense of the word. There have been cases of couples adopting children from outside of the country, things go terribly wrong, they try to put the kid in foster care and the state holds them responsible for cost.
What's most likely is Greta's in-laws got full or primary custody of the kid and in that case Greta would have to pay child support. The in-laws might have only adopted if they feared Greta trying to use a custody battle as leverage to punish them or if they just wanted the hulk out of their lives completely.
