The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

William is too smart for this. He picked a really good wife. She's educated, from a normal if wealthy family, good with kids, slightly artsy with the photos but had a real job at one point. She wasn't trying to do art for a living, like Meghan, which is always unstable.

When you have a screwball mom like Diana, a lot of times one kid will recreate the drama in their life like Harry did. But often the other kids look very deliberately for someone from a more stable family. Look at how close they are with Kate's parents. That's not a coincidence; William was looking for a stable girl from a stable family with parents he could count on for help & advice. He knows his family was wacky better than anyone else.

If Kate does pass soon (and I hope she doesn't, that would be awful for her kids), William will look for another stable woman. He has this weird crazy family. His dad was too old, posh, and mild to be very useful; his mom was too young and mentally ill to provide stability. So he found REALLY sensible in-laws. He will IMO do the same thing again.

The complete lack of hysteria or weirdness from either of them gives me hope for the future. I genuinely hope Catherine gets to live her normal lifespan and keep her health (chemo is hard on you, even if you do get a full remission there are often lifelong issues, and she’s also had significant surgery.)
. It seems increasingly rare to find people who have the ability to keep their mouths shut, be diplomatic, and never put a foot wrong. Liz II was a master at it, and it was that stability that won her the respect people had for her. We have a whole world filled with people who cannot shut up, and who create endless drama, do dumb things me broadcast it online. A bit of stuff upper lip and self control is what’s needed and they seem to have it in spades.
William having the insight or instinct, whichever it is, to pick someone grounded is a good thing. You often see this is really messed up families - kids either replicate the disaster, or they strike out and try very hard to not pass the family madness on. Best of luck to them

One of my extended family members is legendary for dating/marrying the most unstable, BPD nutcases you ever met. I mean, I was picking up that these chicks weren’t right when I was eight, and I was pretty sheltered.

Anyways, the family had a little shed/shack building on the farm, like a renovated old granary. When he inevitably got stabbed/bitten/stolen from by these chicks on their way out the door, he would retreat there like a hermit and stay there for months while he put himself together. Then emerge like an emotionally damaged butterfly, ready to give it another go.

I wonder what the Royal Family equivalent is? Like a little apartment somewhere where they can sit on him so he can’t publish books or talk to the press and make things worse while they pay her off/kidnap the kids etc?

Because you know she’s going to hang that memoir over them like a retarded sword of Damocles, ready to accuse them of, wait for it, RACISM, unless they pay her to go away.

What a pathetic whimper these pair have deflated into.

That used to be the colonies. After all he did, the least they can do to him is to exile him for a few years. Now, they can always ship him to S. Africa and keep him entertained with military and sport shit until they find him a much better lady they can control and can use to control him.

If she left him, she would still be the Duchess of Sussex (if he remarried, I'm unclear what she will be called, generally you go from THE X of Y to Name, X of Y - like Diana went from The Princess of Wales to Diana, Princess of Wales). She would lose the right to use HRH which shouldn't matter much anway since she and Harry both stopped using the HRH stylings (but still legally retained them).

Why didn't Harry seek out local rural polo teams for his stupid "documentary?" Places where the field is tamped back down between chukkas by a dude in a pickup with a big metal slab, and not people in Sunday's best? Where famers ride the horses, and people tailgate? That would have made him far more money, because people might actually watch that show. But then, he'd have had to hang out with hicks and horsemen who don't need spurs to direct their ponies. And Meghan would have to hang around country folk with interracial families who don't all hate each other. I guess that would go against her general racism narrative.
ETA- No one in America cares about Nacho, the forty-something from Argentina who is inherently rich. They want Chloe the fourteen year-old from Bridgewater whose Dad managed to scrape up together the money for two horses so she could play.

What a coincidence, giving money to Ashley Biden’s vanity project and magically Harry’s visa issues disappeared (at least until Trump takes office).

Oh and this dumb cunt announced her brand before having ANY trademarks for it. She’s been rejected like a bad kidney and is begging for another extension to try to make a case for why she should be allowed to trademark a geographic location.

When the British Royal Family sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.
