NES games are very easy if you approach them in Current Year with years-long experience in more modern games giving you the ability to think like a game designer. For a grade schooler, they're certainly pretty hard.

Mike is weird, he can both ace later SMB levels while being blind-drunk and be totally incompetent in more modern games. So many times I've seen him stream some Slobwave game where he slams his face into the wall for 15 minutes before his brain warms up enough to try a different approach. He played chess on NES while going through the whole library and I think I've never seen a worse chess player in my life.

I wish you could just download a part of a Youtube video to clip here because I always remember the time Mike was absolutely dumbfounded by the icons Stuntman uses. One part at 8:45 in this VOD where he does this awkward U-turn because he can't figure it out and another at 1:28:00 where he gets bamboozled completely.

I know he rarely does new releases but I hope he does a review of the new Nosferatu coming out soon. Getting really solid reviews already.

This is Screenwave-related drama but rest assured you fucking just know there will a Neighbor video where James plays the game and shills it.

Screenwave has been publishing games beyond just the AVGN ones and is going to release a Toxic Crusaders game:

It honestly looks pretty good but Screenwave is being dodgy in showing off the game and it's release is looming for early 2025 I think. But beyond that, they're also involved with the new Blu-ray for the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. The big controversy is that they're using ai to upscale it and it doesn't look too bad but I'm a little indifferent because I never liked the cartoon (the toys were better).

A dude does a breakdown on the quality of the transfers and the new Screenwave-produced documentary:

There are 6 episodes on the first disc and 7 on the second. The special features are pretty evenly spaced out with the feature length doc about the game is on the second disc.

No lossless sound but that was expected.

The end credits have been redone. They are much clearer than the rest of the picture from the episodes. This means Screenwave gets put into the end credits. I wish they had left these alone but I guess Screenwave needs to get their name anywhere they can.

OH MY GOD! The making of the video game SUCKS!!!! There is no footage outside of the interview footage and chapter title cards. There is no footage from the films. Not footage from the TV show. There isn't even any footage from the GAME THIS IS A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT. The closest we get to is some art behind a few of the interviewees. How can you not have any footage from the game? You guys made the damn thing. This means all we get are people talking about something we should be seeing. One of the guys talks about the move sets each character has (which he does twice. Once at the beginning and then 45 minutes or so later. He is describing these move sets which is the time we should be seeing footage of these move sets. The pacing is also off. They will be talking about something, move over to something else, and then come back to it but with no rhythm. This thing is all over the place and is boring as hell. I hated this doc and wish it hadn't been included. It really brings down the quality of this release. I'll take Troma putting the same special features on each disc in a set all day. There is a charm to it. This doc is the exact opposite. It's a soulless doc about a video game made by people who weren't fans of the series five years ago. They act like they love it but you can tell there is not that much love at all.

So it's your typical Screenwave-quality production from what it seems. I'm hoping that the game will be good but ya' know, I think Screenwave's venture into game development won't be very successful.

We get it, playing a game is the point of a game. Who the fuck was ever saying otherwise?

So when do you guys think AVGN fell off as a series?

Personally I noticed the rot setting in after the movie but didn't reach critical mass until James entered the sellout stage and let a bunch of unfunny obese guys shit it up.

But like what video really solidified that feeling of "Oh shit this isn't gonna get better."

For the sake of not having to think too hard about it, I'm just gonna break it down into Eras using the official "Season" playlist.

Classic Era (Season 1 - 5) : Great. Classic videos. All still fun to watch, and still when AVGN had a strong vision and identity.

Silver Age (Season 6 - 7) : Great, some of my favorite episodes, but this is where I think the cracks start to show. Has some terrible episodes like the NES world Championship and the Toxic Warriors episode.

Bronze Age (Season 8 - 12) : Okay. This is when it starts to feel like "AVGN Lite". This is when it becomes apparent that James is now making videos on games he couldn't care less about. Most episodes are "Meh" with some outliers. These are obviously games that James never played, but he at least still sounds like he's putting in a bit of effort for the performance.

Sludge Period (Season 13 - present) : Most episodes are Meh, James sounds deflated. Too many skits and stupid story-lines. The best episodes during this time period are episodes that aren't traditional AVGN Episodes (Like contra how I remember it and Doom Ports)

So to answer the question, I think season 8 was when it started to fall off, season 13 was when it really started to suck big donkey balls.

Be fair, Stuntman is one of the hardest driving games of all time.

Am I the only one who almost never had this experience?

Yes, some games have bullshit moments, but as a kid, you adapted and overcame it.... or you got a Game Genie.

My own memory is that on the NES I used Game Genie as a crutch, but then the 16-bit generation came along and I actually started beating games legitimately (though Ducktales NES was the first game I remember beating without help). Then I went back to the NES later and a lot of games I used to think of as super hard... really weren't.

Though to some extent I wonder if that's because James Mike just happened to pick bad games. I mean, even as a kid I knew Simpsons games sucked, and the only time I ever ended up playing them was because of my mom buying/renting them for me at a time when I wasn't around to tard wrangle her. I imagine that's how a lot of crap games ended up in people's libraries. As a kid I knew for sure I cared nothing for Bart's Nightmare but I wound up playing it because of my mom.
I think some of it may have been a generational thing. Every console era has had to deal with shovelware, and I certainly myself was the victim of what James discussed (namely with the Wii). The thing is when I look back on those games, I realize a lot of them were random games that never received any attention or press. They were just random I saw on the shelves that looked cool. It was my own fault for not realizing there was a reason why I hadn't heard of them before now.

From the 90s onward, there were more filters and structures in place to help weed out lackluster games from the line of sights of children. On top of that, up until the end of the seventh generation there seemed to genuine exceptional talent and competency in the industry. That wasn't fully true in the 80s, where the games that are the most remembered are the true cream of the crop. A lot of developers probably struggled a lot with the advances in home consoles and what exactly a video game could do. On top, plenty of terrible games received coverage and advertisements.

It isn't exactly unbelievable that a lot of kids from that time remember playing more lackluster games compared to the legendary ones.

Fuck this stoner walrus faggot with an obnoxious laugh, I miss Mike. This guy has nothing to say, I'd take a million anecdotes about Zelda or Donald Duck...
I don't hate the neighbor but he's not camera ready and his interactions with James is very forced and not funny. It says everything that it's been 2 days and the video only has 56K views on a channel with 3.87 million subscribers.

For those who don't know: The "Neighbor Nerd" was supposedly a childhood friend of James. He appeared on one of the gay ass Cinemassacre Slobwave podcasts and for once The Cinemassacre Truth was kind and the general consensus was that he seemed like an ok guy and had a cool voice. Of course electrons moved through time with Big Ryan and the Slobs (who totally don't obsess over TCT and this thread) and they decided because of a few positive comments Neighbor Nerd (I think his name is John?) would be their new super star.

Sauce: I had joined Reddit just to follow TCT back then because the memes and troll comments were funnier than AVGN has been in years.

Neighbor Nerd seems like an ok guy who is grabbing some shekels from Slobwave and enjoying the youtube thing. He's no Mike Matei though...
