I used to joke that Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) was made as a direct response to 9/11, because that's around the period where a lot of "edgy" media would come out. Slipknot, Disturbed, etc. But I never actually believed that shit.

Then just today, I was watching a Let's Play and learned they use the word "terrorist" over and over, and the game starts in a burning city cutting between news footage and military meetings, etc. and my jaw hasn't left the floor since. What the fuck is this game?

I know it is a relic of its time, but seeing Shadow the Hedgehog pulling out a realistic MP5 fucking sends me, especially since it was done 100% sincerely.
Seeing a cartoon hedgehog wielding a realistic MP5 is absurd enough, but that scene fucks with me for an even stupider reason.

He fucking cocks it like a shotgun. That's not how that works.

Kuon turns 20 years old today, and it’s considered to be one of the most rare and expensive games to own for the PS2. In fact, it’s so rare that prices for the game range from $890+ to almost $1,000 for it to be in excellent and new condition.

Either way, it may have been panned on release date to the point where it was not marketed well for North America during its time, but it’s still an interesting game that delves deep into Japanese horror and spirits involving folklore of ancient Japanese history:

The issue with those niche ps2 titles is that they usually monumentally suck and most of the time they are short enough to finish the same day you bought them on despite paying full price. The only fun to gain from them is having someone else play them and give you the rundown on what's interesting.

The price itself is also meaningless since only influencers and other scalpers would pay the jacked up price while actual copies would be traded on eBay for 100$ tops.

Interesting you say that. The other day my dad was excited at the news. They did a segment on how retro games are worth a fortune now, saying that Mario Bros sold for over a million dollars! He wanted to raid the attic and sell our collection. I told him to go for it, but told him he won't see that kind of money. He seemed disappointed and I feel a bit bad about it. But I thought the whole WGA fraud collapsed years ago. It's weird to see it making a comeback.

In hindsight, as fucking insane as Shadow seems now, it made sense. The original Sonic was an amalgamation of everything people found cool and "edgy" in the 90s. Like Bart Simpson and rock music. So, what was cool in the 00s? Metal, bleakness, edginess, motorcycles, and "realistic" analogies to the war on terror. It was Sega trying to apply the formula that worked for the time to the (then) current popular culture. The fact that it didn't work with a cartoon Hedgehog was a predictable outcome.

The climate of fear, dread and anger that came after 9/11 seeped into damn near everything in pop culture, and I think Shadow the Hedgehog represented the zenith of that. The point where it went too far, and I think maybe everyone was like "okay, we need to dial this back a bit. It's gotten fucking ridiculous." Which is why people make fun of 'edgelord' shit now. It wasn't just Shadow, but Shadow was one of the big things I think. The moment cartoon hedgehogs are turned edgy, you know shit has just gotten silly.

This concludes your anthropology lesson. Here, have a historical artifact from this bygone era.

20 years ago this would've made you an outcast. Now it's the most common story in my generation.

Hang in there, bros. We're all in this together. <3

It really is nuts. I work but odd hours, so I play primarily during normal work hours. It's oddly energizing. Then, some time ago, I watched some WoW raid stream and it just dawned on me: Nobody gives a shit what they do for a living cause the game matters more to both viewer and player. Even if they stream full time they could be making minimum wage and nobody would care.

I care only about what other people do for a living cause I've got no game to focus on. If I was balls deep in Classic I'd not care if I played with a millionaire. I wish passions could overwrite my financial insecurity. :(

ow the edge

gotta say, just like using breaking benjamin for game trailers, as silly at it was it's still an earnest expression of the times, which in hindsight makes it still fun in how silly it was, if not more so.
nothing the current year shit will invoke in 10-20 years.

Look at how stark the contrast is in culture and aesthetics from 2004 to 2014.
Then compare that to how damn similar 2014 and 2024 are.

We've been besieged by homogeneous slop and only now are we seeing a slight push against it. It's why "Boomer Shooters" are such a popular trend now, when literally all they are is "let's make a game that doesn't do the shit that became trendy in 2007."

Huh, Lords of the Fallen is still getting updates. Nothing major, but adding new reward systems, summons and optimising performance/combat flow this late in its life is quite impressive.
I know the game got rightfully shat on but imo it did a lot of things well. Hope it doesn't discourage the studio from taking another crack at the formula.

Yeah, hopefully any potential sequel will build on the dual world stuff. The amount of planning that has to go into something like that will never not impress me. Its a flawed gem, but I found it extremely addictive - especially once the modifier patch went live. Yeah yeah they're just loot and enemy randomisers, but they gave it legs.
