That isn't how it works. You cannot be locked up for actions committed before your probation agreement. This has been explained in the legal thread by American barristers.

You cannot be locked up for crimes in the same instance/charge related to your charge. What is "related" is probably some test that judge has to balance the double jeporary clause by weighing the accused 's interest in closure of the process (hence "process as punishment" phrase) vs state's interest in accurate adjudications from what I understand.

So if I go throw crackhead parties and get arrested for that, you can charge me for the murder 10 years ago that someone snitched on me post plea, but you (likely) can't charge me for rape and torture charges with a weapon of testicular torsion at the same party after I plead guilty to cocaine possession, and you definitely can't charge me for trafficking cocaine at that party after I plead guilty to possession.

Is the system like that just so lawyers can rack up work hours? The parties should work up a deal on their own, present it to the judge so he can prepare and plea at the start of the trial, ready for sentencing or to go on with the procedures.

Its all about scheduling. Set a date so we can have a discussion of dates where we can have meetings to discuss dates to have future meetings.

In this case you have the meeting to decide what plea you enter, then a hearing on that date to declare that plea to the court so they can set a date for trial or sentencing or whatever.

90%+ of all court dates are talking about other dates and all the parties (and the judge) hope everyone will change their minds so they can make shit go away and do no work.
