Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I doubt we'll see a PC port of WWF No Mercy or WCW VS NWO: Revenge (God tier of wrestling games) because tranny furry programmers never had the testosterone levels to enjoy wrestling in the first place.

On the other hand, Jim Sterling trooning out happened, so there are probably troon programmers out there that enjoy or previously enjoyed wrestling.

question: is retroarch a bad emulator? im trying to play Sega Saturn games and I've been finding weird shit happen with my computer when i start it up
im not very knowledgeable with emulators

Is this your first time experiencing Saturn via emulation?

if so, go with Mednafen emulator while using mednaffe as a frontend GUI. It's the most accurate you can get, but you need a quad processor if you want the perfect experience, especially for any 3D games (even some 2D games tend to stutter on a low processor)

Retroarch isn't exactly an emulator. It's a app that uses "cores" of other emulators and advertised a sort of "all-in-one emulator". Some of the "cores" are out of date, with Dolphin and Citra (even before the takedown) for example. Sega Saturn is notorious for being difficult to emulate. What exactly are you having problems with?

Yeah Retroarch is a nice* fancy* frontend for other emulators, it keeps them all in one place and adds special effects and doodads to make your experience better*

You'd have better luck looking at what core you're running, exactly, and then googling it or letting us know and we can tell you what to do with it (@Celebrate Nite also had a good suggestion too)

What are your guys thoughts on adding scan lines and filters on games when emulating. I use to think it was gay and over the top, but after playing around with it and watching some videos on the topic, I'm kind of getting into it.

All the more reason for a port then.
It would just be polishing a turd. The gameplay is fundamentally flawed. The game shits half-a-dozen aliens onto the map, you kill them, drive 50 yards and the game shits another bunch of aliens onto the map. The entire game is just this. Every alien in the later levels takes a full second of sustained gunfire to bring down (on Easy). Then you fall into a beginner's trap and have to redo entire sections.

Any potential remake would have to completely change the game from the ground up. At that point, you might as well make a different game.

I usually just add basic scanlines for old home consoles, and the dot matrix effect that adds a subtle grid to the screen for Gameboy systems.

akshually retroarch isn’t an emulator, its a frontend for the libretro API which developers have implemented multiple programs including emulators for in the form of libretro cores

RetroArch is great, just make sure you’re using the right core and tweak any core settings you may need to. I don’t know anything about Saturn emulation, but you probably want the Beetle core (AKA Mednafen) for the best accuracy, and make sure you have whatever BIOS you need. You’re gonna have to be way more specific on what you mean by “weird shit” though.

Good shaders are good and can add a strong illusion of detail, bad shaders are bad and just look kinda dumb, simple as that. I use a CRT shader for older console games and GBA, but for GB(C) I use either a dot matrix or nothing.
Honorable mention goes to that one shader that interpolates sprites to give them 4x resolution or whatever because it looks like ass 99% of the time but can look good for bright pastel-colored games like Yoshi’s Island.

What weird shit?

full second of sustained gunfire
Are you sure about that? Regardless, all the issues you named can possibly be fixed or mitigated if the modders are passionate enough, which means you have a point.

If you like atrocious UI, sure.
Yep, but unfortunately for people like me who don't like bloat, and prefer standalones, some of the cores are quite unrivaled.
