My question is how easy this is to bypass. I mean, kids aren't THAT smart, but they are clever and a kid does have all day to figure out a bypass, and a kid that is very stubborn and has a LOT of time on his hands is surprisingly capable. Ofcourse, the only skill our methaphorica kid is going to need is a bit of sneaking to sneak into his parent's bedroom, yonk either one of their ID documents (passport, ID, whatever) and use that.I should have added more context regarding that (my bad).
For expereinces that are 18+ and adult themed (bars, clubs etc), I feel that a verified account should be necessary. Standard instances (minigames, cinemas, sfw social spaces etc) should not have that restriction.
Although there is nothing preventing bad actors from being on sfw instances, it further reduces the chance of kids accessing the nsfw ones, which still helps in my opinion (even if it isn't 100% effective)
Or if our kid is technologically competent and one of their parents has a persona ID said kid could either bait one of the parents/older sibling, they may say "Oh you need to do that for this online school system thing" or "You need to do that for (insert any sort of important sounding technichal/law/goverment jargon). chances are the parent will just get this done&over with so their kid can stop nagging them about it so the parent can go back to watching football or scrolling endlessly trough facebook". Online ID verification may seem strong and secure, but it isn't.
Also, about the last sentence, preventing kids on being on 18+ instances may seem good'n'all, y'know, to prevent them from all the 18+ NSFW, but at that point it all falls apart anyway since if a kid is that horny he can just open up one of the ten thousand or so porn sites who's age verification is "Are you over 18?, click correctly and don't lie".... Because kids definetly DEFINETLY do not lie. (Atleast with reddit you have to log in to access 18+ subreddits but it takes like 1 click if you have a google account)
Stopping kids from accessing 18+ spaces, is a Ok idea, despite it's flaws, but that doesn't solve to root problem, we are simply solving a tangential issue. An issue, but not the "correct" issue if you know what i mean. YYes, this is good, HOVEWER the root cause is the INSANE amounts of gooners and pedos on there. Barring kids out of 18+ instances to protect them from this stuff is good, until, as i\e discussed, they open up a incognito browser and proceed to make god dissapointed. Now, i know you can set up a DNS blocking system on your router to filter out those sites, set up parental controls on the kid's device to begin with, but i doubt that many parents have the technichal knowledge to do something like this, and the moment said kid realizes they can use their phone's cellular connection it all falls apart. Also, parental controls are very VERY easy to bypass if your kid knows how to use tasmngr. The parental controls on windows 10, from my experience use a background service that you can stop, and incase you set a time based limit, the moment your kid knows how to get to the BIOS and change the time it all falls apart because the BIOS loads BEFORE windows 10/11, so parental controls don't work. On linux parental controls don't exist, and if they somehow do the kid can backup his stuff to a flash drive, do a quick 'lil reinstall and done.
Instead of trying to stop kids from getting into harm's way, we should remove the harm to begin with. VRchat is fixing the symptom, not the root cause. They are doing fine trying to fix the symptom, credit where credit is due, it does show they atleast care a little, but as i said. Fixing the root cause is always, ALWAYS more effective than suppressing the symptom.
Basically the takeaway is that you can't stop a kid who's stubborn enough and has a lot of time. And another takeaway is that acessing VRchat porn is now more difficult that acessing actual porn sites so all they did was drive the horny teens out of VRchat to (insert any of the ten or so thousand porn sites). And let's not forget that those kids are probably also definetly using discord, which is also, definetly not infested with pedos
Also the thing you said about pedos being able to go on SFW spaces basically invalides the point of this, assuming the point was to keep the kids from creepy adult gooners.
