What I've found is that not only does this let me dodge political conversations with the blue hairs of the family pretty easily (as I'm often not one-on-one with them anyway) people are often much more candid and open when it's just you and them. Especially given the understanding is that what happens in those conversations isn't to be repeated to others.

I have taken the approach of removing all left wing people for my life because every leftist I've ever met was scum I'm just trying to screw you over because they have very weak morality and they just use their ideologies and excuse to be a sociopath.

The guideline in my household was always don't talk about politics in mixed company. Basically, keep it to one-on-one conversations or small groups where everyone is interested in talking about it. Not over the dinner table generally and especially not holiday dinners.

For example: one of my family members brought up in a one-on-one conversation that they had heard about the term AGP and wanted to know what I thought of it. They had heard about it on a podcast and knew better than to ask one of the other family members. People feeling comfortable saying what they actually think has led to some pretty amusing conversations.

Discussions accidentally winding up there is fine, but not intentionally going for it. If they can't act like civilized human beings, then verbally give them both barrels.
