As I understand it, Inquisition actually did well financially? Or I could have heard wrong I guess.

BioWare has accumulated a lot of good will, over twenty years. Mass Effect, KOTOR, and DA together are the most beloved RPGs of all time. (Add in Neverwinter nights and it’s reputation becomes almost legendary in itself).

I think for that reason-the studio is worth keeping around at EA. However reduced-even if each game releases further reduces the studio’s reputation, they can just lay off another fraction of the staff-and keep it around, potentially for another decade to twenty years.

People have grown up with BioWare games-nostalgia and respect carry a lot of water. So the studio could last in some form, I think for another generation or so.
Inquisition (allegedly) sold 12 million units and was developed by a competent team in 3 years. It didn't do amazing (because they spent tens of millions on it) but it did good. Veilguard has been kicking around in some form for 10 years and is almost guaranteed not to make it's money back.

Bioware has no goodwill left. Mass Effect has been tainted by Andromeda, KOTOR by TOR, and now Dragon Age by Veilguard. Neverwinter Nights has been on life support for nearly 20 years and Baldur's Gate 3 (and Divinity) have firmly taken over that fanbase. KOTOR also gets a lot of respect from KOTOR2, which wasn't even BioWare's release.

EA will always have a studio named "BioWare" because they bought it - but they've proven that they cannot make it a successful studio ever again. It's just another studio bought and then gutted by some huge corporation.

Nostalgia and Respect do not carry a lot of water when there are replacements out there and BioWare's old audience has been getting eaten up for nearly two decades.

Was browsing deals on the Xbox store and this is the ONLY time I'd ever seen this "JUST FOR YOU" banner so you know how desperate things are

I remember having a conversation with a friend of mine about the game even before all the weird tranny stuff came out about the game and we both came to the conclusion that if we were ever going to play it, it would be years later during some summer sale when it was down to five bucks.

Now I'm wondering how long it'll take for it to actually hit five dollars and I'm wondering if it would be worth it even then. I'd have to install the bitch and that clicking the mouse several times might be too much effort even to make fun of it.

Inquisition was also released in 2014, an absolutely awful year for videogames. It won GOTY that year for some perspective on how few good games came out that year, so I'm sure lack of any competition helped it.

Don't get me wrong, my Steam replay shows only one new release played last year but 2024 absolutely had better games released than Veilguard.

god, it's been eleven fucking years

Dragon age games have been mechanically trash after origins. The story carried them for a bit but I guess no one at Bioware/EA understands anything but slop games at this point.
Man, i'm gonna be honest (being objectively):
DA: O after Awakening felt a lot but not so much in Witch Hunt.
DA2 feels like a giant DLC, but the story is interesting: not entirely a chosen one (Grey Warden & Inquisitor are chosen ones; one by luck, the other by destiny).
Hawke basically suffers a lot, like any other human in the game (father dies, one sibling dies, the other can survive a taint or die with it, mother dies). Getting a perspective of depressive endings, the mage one is the best: basically betrayed by two main factions, after all the shit happened.
Still, getting 3 times skips in a row is a phase problem. And i don't like it.
Inquisition is the worst of the trilogy, and only matters if you like grinding a lot.
Still, is consistent...
Except of Corypheus; basically putting a giant retcon of the Blight.
The Architect was a real wasted potential.

Its only just clicked.

Tash is literally the name of Satan in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia.

They literally named their non-binary Qunari trans symbol Lucifer. I refuse to believe this was unintentional. Bioware working on multiple levels, not the least that Lucifer, the great betrayer is a dude. Anyone who kills Tash in this game is unironically doing a good thing that will earn treasure in heaven.

ok im willing to bet that it turns out that one of the bioware writers (weekes?) was sabotaging this shitshow by writing Traash

The tranny director and the rest of media really overlooked this, didn't they. It only just occurred to me, and I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia. Albeit, decades ago. And it literally clicked just now as I was commenting in another thread.

Some old guard Bioware writer who had not left literally convinced the DEI hires to name their self insert gender critical character SATAN.

I want to believe this. I really do. or it's a major poe's law thing

still funny as all hell that the woke Stasi was too stupid to detect when they are the butt of the joke. but that's very on brand

On the other hand, I have a hard time believing anyone with creative sway over the game grew up in a household with loving parents who read them Narnia. There might have been some lower level employees snickering about it and possibly gaslighting the tranny higher ups into believing it was a good call. Excellent catch. I loved those books as a kid.

Is there a compilation of Taash speaking qun that is slowed down and sped up? That would be hilarious.

What a waste of a character too. Oh boy she did one small thing at Weisshaupt. Oh boy she's one of the required characters you must place as part of your plan in the finale.

But aside from all that....like if you choose the fortune group or whatever as your Rook background do you get anything other than (I assume) unique dialogue with Taash and Isabella?

Taash...what a fucked up storyline.
I'm autistic and arrogant as fuck because I love hunting dragons here let me show you my elaborate way of catching them that is never used again. Oh this is my mom. Hi mom. Fuck off mom. Anyway I'll join you. Oooh secret cave with treasure. Well guess I'm not man or woman I'm a completely fraudulent sexuality and mom you'll refer to me as such.

Later on

Mom: Taash what the fuck am I doing in this shitty hub world

I made u food mom

Mom: fuck you Taash you disappoint me byeeeee

Later:

Oh no rook my mom is missing oh no blood they kidnapped her. Fuck. Hey there's mom. Hi mom

Mom: Taash even though you're a hideous revolting bulldyke you're my kid *hits switch and gets immediately whacked in the neck*.

NOOOOO MOMMMMMM

later:

Hey idk. So mom died. Nobody learned anything.

Made me wanna kms. It was so bad. Like I know we all hated on Sera and stuff but compared to this shit she's a breath of fresh elven air.

Eh, 2014 has Stick of truth and Divinity only going for wrpg.
It won Goty because It was BioWare and nothing more

At least with Sera as ugly and annoying as she was you could either not recruit her in the first place or get her killed.

Trash forces herself into the party and you're often forced to include her.
i despised Sera in Inquisition, easily the worst character bioware had ever made yet somehow they made a game where every single character including returning characters are somehow worse then her...

It's like the Star Wars Christmas Special but every character is either Jar Jar Binks or Tidus, except for Mark Hamill, he deserves to be in it.
