If you ever speak to any national park ranger, hee will go on a rant about how much they hate Smokey the Bear because he managed to convince people that wildfires are not good. when in fact as we all know wildfires are natural and need to occur to stop massive places like the ones we see from taking place.

I dunno what the rest of the populace heard from those PSAs, but I at least knew that if you go out camping and such to put out your fires for the safety of everyone and everything around you. The problem with Smokey is all it focused on was human activity, I don't think I've ever heard them talk about lightning strikes causing wildfires and how those are natural as can be even though firefighters will still be on active duty if just to divert fire away from human settlements.

Then again, I'm biased about my sentimentality because I can read shit, and my mother has a stupidly-cute vintage Smokey the Bear teddy bear she kept from her childhood.

I was actually thinking about this in relation to Katrina, the most prominent absolute failure to respond to a natural disaster I'd ever seen. Before this, I'd considered Dubya's response, and shit like "heck of a job, Brownie!" the dumbest, most useless disaster response I'd ever seen.

This takes the cake by far, though. While you can see things in the leadup to Katrina that were incompetent and didn't help, the shit California's government did before the disaster almost reeks of actual malice and hatred of the population of the state. Already having slashed the budgets of the very responders needed most in a situation like this, that crazy bitch LA mayor was demanding even more be slashed literally days before the actual fires.

The really shocking thing is California, and particularly LA were the absolute best in the world at disaster response and management. They set the standards and practices that everywhere else followed and learned from. The only other entity in their class for this was Tokyo. (which had it's own moment of abject failure a few years ago.)

If anyone is looking for a good Saturday Afternoon movie to watch, that seems to mirror LA this week, might I suggest Shin Godzilla?

You're not going to die from a bit of dispersed smoke particles. This the same mentality that has caused California to limit controlled burns. Without controlled burns, you get much bigger and destructive fires.

The big problem with wildfires like this is that it’s not just trees and shrubs burning, it also shit like cleaning chemicals and melted plastic mixed into the wood ash that’s in the air.

As much as hated doing it during COVID times this is a case where you should wear an N95 mask and get good filters for your HVAC system.

Bring back controlled burns!

I was more surprised by how many trees seem to have survived the dense neighborhood fires that are totally burnt out. Maybe the leaves went, but the trunks looked totally healthy and some looked green. Couldn't tell what they were but they were 100% not palms or eucalyptus.
